The Pioneer is the basic model and so is the UD5007.....UD5007 will be better in terms of playback

I'd fully agree with efernand1. The Marantz UD5007 has network playback from NAS as well. And has app control too.

If you dont have a smart TV at the moment, then you will also get youtube, Hulu and Netflix through the Marantz.

So if the Marantz and pioneer are identically or closely priced, my vote would go for the Marantz too.

The pioneer is 17k and the Marantz is 29k.

I have chrome cast and firestick tv, hence that function is not really important.

What I want the player to do is play dvd and audio cd as best as possible

I would suggest to contact MZ Audio and check for the best rates for UD5007....

Pioneer used to make luxury line up of players which can be compared to the Oppo...

BDP LX 55 and BDP 450....these are not available and used to cost 20k to 30k....

I have both...one at my moms place and one at my place....

I was in the same situation once a year back. It matters about the DAC in both.
Pioneer DAC is inferior to Marantz.
Again Marantz 5007 is a basic model.
So I went with pioneer bdp180 and got schiit bifrost DAC.
I have PM6005 which does have DAC. This is inferior to Schiit bifrost DAC.
My suggestion would be to go for Pioneer BDP180 with schiit DAC.
Pioneer have an option digital pass through. So optical out from pioneer to DAC would be better than Marantz UD5007.
Off course, You need to go bit higher in terms of cost.
With proper DAC you can even connect to PC for playing.

Definitely Marantz UD5007 in that comparison. also if u have good budget do check out Marantz UD7007 which is superior has very good reviews.
Also Oppo Players like bdp 103 or bdp 203.
If music listening is the priority then a dedicated CD player or good external DAC will be worth considering depending upon your requirement and music collection u have.

I used to have a Marantz DV4001 DVD player. It was excellent for CD playback. I expect the UD5007 would most probably be better. No idea of the Pioneer.

What's the rest of your chain?

I have a Denon avr 1200w, Wharfedale 240. I also have a Maratz PM 5005 with wharf 220. The problem is I have run out of space to setup the 220.
