Hi all,

Can you please share your thoughts on this CD player. I auditioned this one at a Pioneer exclusive last week and totally liked it considering the price (23k) and its performance.

I know Pioneer is not a brand that comes to our mind when looking for CD players of high quality but this one impressed me and has also got great reviews on What Hifi.

Pioneer PD-D6-J - whathifi.com CD player review - from the experts at whathifi.com

I didn't walk-in to search for a CD player but just ran into this and now feel like picking it up. But wanted some expert opinions and advise before i make the move.

Just so as you know, it has got dual differential DAC which is something we only get in high end players.

I am not too technical but have figured a little by reading this forum and other magazines. Please advise, thanks a lot!

Here there are no Pioneer fanboys :mad::mad: and some says that it is slightly younger than other hi fi co's so does not havre "pedigree":ohyeah::ohyeah:

If you like it,go for it!

Pio knows digiatl well and I find their products are very good and VFM.I had vintage pioneer with stable platter mechanism ( It takes CD facing UP!:D) and it was demonstrated in Mumbai meet. Also I have another 101 CD chnager of pioneer with very good sound.

Btw I have copy of hifinews Oct 2009
There was group test between Pioneer <Nad,Marantz,Cyrus and Cart Cd players.Nad was " recommanded" where Pioneer and Marantz was "Outstanding product!"

Honestly, it was the most terrible way to have auditioned a system which is probably why I liked it so much.

The showroom was huge and didn't have a proper AV room or anything organized even for stereo setup. The dealer had a pair of small BS speakers (which was also impressive, but don't remember the model number) and they were literally placed unevenly at less than 3 feet distance yet gave me a memorable performance. It was connected to a 25 Watt Pioneer Amp and I toggled the same set of songs between a DVD player and the CD player (the best comparison I could).

I tried the Blower's Daughter by Damien Rice first and noticed a very obvious difference in the vocals.. one of my fav tracks and sounded so good and I was so stunned..

I even tried a couple of tracks by Dire Straits and the detailing and dynamics were brilliant.. Considering the poor standards of the setup (speaker placement, distance and the noise all over the showroom), i think it did great and could only be better when given a slightly better atmosphere to work..

I have had heard other systems like Marantz 7001 SACD, etc but couldn't do an A to B comparison.. But honestly, this has impressed me the most so far.. but again, by no stretch of imagination i'm an expert which is why i wanted to consult you guys.. thanks for looking into this for me..

Let me know if you need any further information!

Prashanth,

I also checked that, and really liked the product, the SACD performance is very neutral, and musical. It has burr-brown d/a converters which is a product of Texas Instruments. Also the built quality and functionality is impressive. But do take a second opinion before just jumping into this.

Cheers!!

prashanth, The Pioneer CDP sure seems to have impressed the what hi fi guys and the price seems to be on par with the international price. It would be great if you could try out some other cdp against this in the same set up. Which speakers were used? Which brand atleast?

Also I dont think you can just simply say which DAC chip is better. Once again, it depends on your preference. The Wolfson wm8741 is very well regarded, but you may still like the philips tda 1541 better, even if the janta says, the latter is NOS config, has too warm a sound with loss of detail.
So audition more, and I am sure you will have clarity on the issue.

Thanks iaudio,

But if you can be little bit elaborative about the characteristics of the DAC chips and how it affects the setup will be great? Just for information purpose. But I believe its not just the DAC chip the implementation makes a lot of difference on the resultant performance?

Best,
