Hi

I'm looking for good tv for normal tv channels but when I go for CRT many are suggesting me to go for LCD. But I'm really concerned about the SD picture quality in LCD tv (when compared between 22inch LG lcd tv and my old sharp 20 inch tv)

Is is possible to get CRT quality in any LCD tv? If so could you please let me know the model and make?

My budget is 45k max

I'm really confused. Could anyone in this forum please help me out?

Thanks a lot

There is nothing wrong with a CRT if it meets your expectations and suits your requirements.

Almost all the content in India is SD and regular DVDs are 480p - Rs50 DVDs are most likely VCDs with lesser resolution.

If you are likely to watch only TV and not HD movies,if you are only looking at a small size TV - there is nothing wrong with going with any standard CRT Flat-TV model from Samsung/LG or any others.

Pros -
  • The Contrast is unsurpassed (i.e. true reproductions of highest levels of black and white)
  • Color clarity and depth is still excellent (The lotus has 15 millions shades and if you have the capacity in your eyes you can see that the CRT will show all of them)
  • There is almost nil motion blur (Even the fastest motions are discernible)
  • Minimal Geometric Distortion (with newer flat models)
  • Zero support needed (mature technology)
  • Very sturdy
  • Price is so low that you can spend the rest of the money on a vacation

LCD Pros
  • It is a social symbol nowadays :D and folks will stop badgering you about not getting the latest and greatest technology.
  • It is 1/3 - 1/4 the size of a CRT and doesn't require a huge table (can also be wall mounted)
  • It can double up as a PC monitor.
  • Power consumption is less
  • Strain on eyes is supposedly low (I haven't experienced it but nevertheless others claim it)
  • Sizes larger than 30 are cheaper than the equivalent CRT models.
  • When displaying the native resolution - it is very sharp.

Hope this helps.

For viewing normal TV channels best to stick with CRT, especially if you find the PQ of CRT better. All TV channels (with the exception of FTV and a few HD channels which are in 16:9) are all in 4:3 aspect ratio and CRT is best for viewing 4:3 content. Go with an LCD only if you want to watch the handful of HD channels provided by some STB operators, or if you are into watching movies through DVD/ DivX etc.

By the way, the picture quality of LCD is not at all bad for viewing normal cable TV. It is just that you need very good reception because even small imperfections look more prominent on an LCD TV. And normal cable will obviously not look good on a 22" LCD, the reason being that these 22" LCDs are just TN monitors with cheap in-built TV tuners which do not do any scaling. The 26" and above LCDs have better upscaling engines, not to mention better panels.

But with a budget of 45K I am really tempted to suggest you to go for either a plasma or LCD:D
