Plinius : What happened to this giant of the past ?

They would have realized that making big and very expensive marketing noise in the form of adds in Hifi magazines (followed by positive reviews in the same magazine) and presence on all trade fairs in this world sometimes does not pay off. They would now probably quietly do their business and satisfy customers around the world through advice of qualified dealers and built up a satisfied customer base like that. Another approach of doing business and also make money. They still have a presence in India.

Trigon is another manufacturer that does business like that, I was told by their local dealer.

It's probably understandable that present day hi-fi ( the expensive variety !) focus a lot on appearance barring just a few. People always fall for the exotic or flashy looks of enclosures.( Maybe like a woman...packaging is absolutely crucial !) Makes the equipment even more expensive !

I've heard Plinius at shows along with a lot of other gear. Unless you get it home you can never really say if you like the sound or not . If it looks great it takes time for the 'appearance' to fade into the background and then you may not really like it so much and hanker for an 'upgrade' to your system.....and so it goes on. Keeps the hi-fi business alive !;)

You would think that after some 50 or 60 years of development and some really exotic material and testing facilities ( and super smart engineers !) that the 'ultimate sound ' was arrived at ! Looks like they have not.....and will not ! We will keep making variations which keeps the business going !:)

Theyre amps didnt come cheap - and i believe they are new zealand based. I assume it would be difficult gaining sales and brand traction with a population base that small. And the minute you export to USA / Europe, competition is huge amongst local players

Square_wave, Plinius is still existing and doing well. I heard them recently at a show. They still sound great with Dynaudios :-). It still remains one of the more musically satisfying SS amps around.

After all these years when I heard them it was easy to see why we all liked their sound, it has a certain liquidity to its presentation that is a bit SET like. Probably that was the voicing of their original founder and designer Peter Thomson and Gary Morrison. They later had to leave the company as the investors wanted something more commercial.

By the way Peter and Gary have their new company called Pureaudio. Check out: http://www.pureaudio.co.nz/?page_id=23

The new Plinius Inspire series just didn't inspire anything for me at all rather a disappointment. They couldn't properly or sufficiently either drive a Emit M30 or Dali Opticon 6 despite costing Rs 375000 unless and until a Cayin or Creek pressed in to service. It just made me or us realise how full dud this brand has become.

Some nice stuff but very expensive and niche. Nothing much to cater to mass market capacity. So one can only wonder repairs and parts...
