You might be able to find in smaller sizes for much less. Just make sure the sheets aren't too thick. 10mm or less will give you a nice and tight roll.

You don't want to use anything that is too thick. Speaker companies usually provide sponge bungs for the job but for DIY I would suggest trying rolled up hand towels. You need to keep them loosely rolled so as to have some sort of breathing possible. You could also experiment with placement of the towels in the port i.e. slightly loose instead of full port blocking etc.
Straws as mentioned above.
They dont block the port completely and so balance out the mids and bass.
They won't change the tonal quality dramatically and allow for the required breathing space.
The downside is a very slight port chuffing.
