I have seen a fair few members ask where to find movies which we discuss on this etc. Many times, the answer is abroad on amazon. Well there are some great stuff available in India as well.

Over the last couple of years, an amazing array of films have been made available to the Indian cinema lovers to buy at shops.

So here's your window to great films!

In this thread, I will list one great movie deal a day with link of where to buy it from. These will be movies I consider must watch films many of which you might have missed.

I hope this can help you watch some amazing cinema.. :)

Neecha Nagar (Chetan Anand)

Buy it at -Induna.com for Rs. 38 (VCD)

I start off with an Indian film, one of the earliest classics of Indian cinema, the first to hit the international scene in a big way. Anand's debut venture won him the Palm d'Or, the most prestigious Award at Cannes and the Award for Best Film which I consider the highest honour a film can get. It is the only Indian film ever which has got this award.

In his autobiography, Dev Anand says the film's prints had been destroyed forever. So I was exalted to find it available online one fine day.

At just Rs. 38, it is a steal! It is a VCD but you cannot really complain. the prints of Indian movies of the time weren't that great mostly and they wouldn't look much better on a DVD. So it is a non issue where I am concerned.

Chetan Anand was one of the great pioneers and a great directors who also directed films like National Award Winner Haqeeqat and Taxi Driver and Heer Ranjha. Neecha Nagar was his first film though, and like a fair few great directors, it is regarded as his best, a and should be the first you should watch to start on the Chetan Anand Filmography...

Good Beginning.
I presume the audience being targeted would be someone who has moved on from infantile cinema to something a little better?:)

I watch all kinds of cinema really. And it includes the latest hollywood films as well. In fact, I am really looking forward to watching some recent films like Toy Story 3, Winter's Bones, Animal Kingdom, The Social Network as soon as I get the time.

#2 Elevator To The Gallows (Louis Malle)

elevator-to-the-gallows.jpg

Louis Malle's first film, part of the French New Wave is a gripping crime thriller. I watched it among other films at the beginning of the year when to celebrate 50 years of French New Wave cinema, some iconic films were shown in major cities of the country. This film has a really tight plot and screenplay. While I was watching it, I was at the edge of my seat and was wow. More than 50 years later, to hold that same grip is pretty amazing in itself for the type of film Elevator to the Gallows is. Most great films hold their greatness over time, one could argue and I believe a lot in it too. However, it is one thing for an emotional film to work or for a crime film to still hold it's place. It is entirely another matter for a thriller to still have a hold on the nerves of newer audiences because any moment the tension can fade away. In a fast changing world, with more instant gratification, it is a tough job for a thriller to stand the test of time.

As this thread is an attempt to introduce some good films to newer people I will talk about the way the film is structured. It is a film with a very direct story telling. A lot of people shy away from foreign films because they feel it is too high brow, artsy, and whatever. This is a very easy film to follow and because of this, can be a great introduction to foreign language films for those who don't generally watch it. This is a masterpiece and a must watch.
