Poet, painter, journalist, producer, parliamentarian, humanitarian… the man donned so many hats! I haven’t read any of his poems, and knew him largely as a media person.
As an alternative cinema buff, I particularly enjoyed some of the PNC productions - Bollywood Calling, Sur - The Melody of Life, Jhankaar Beats, Mumbai Matinee, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi. Most of their other films were rom-coms, but with varied storylines. PNC also gave opportunity to budding directors and actors. Even when they did projects with the superstars like Amitabh, Kareena or Sanjay Dutt… they came up with something hatke, such as Kaante, Chameli or Shabd. Many of these films have lovely soundtracks. Even in the OTT era PNC productions have made their distinctive mark with ‘Four More Shots Please’ and ‘Modern Love Mumbai.
Even before he got into films production, Pritish Nandy was familiar to our generation (those born before the eighties) with his work on television, especially ‘The Pritish Nandy Show’ a talk show where he showcased and interviewed India’s most eminent personalities from various walks of life.
The 80s-00s was a period when Mumbai’s elite were active in the socio-cultural-literary-media spheres. Most of them had a certain class, a certain sensibility to go with their talents. Unfortunately, we are losing this generation, and there’s no replacement. Pritish Nandy’s passing away is the loss of another keystone in that vanishing ‘SoBo’ ethic/wave that was characterised by cosmopolitanism, sophistication and liberalism.
Trivia: Pritish Nandy started India’s first Internet Cafe in 1996 at Hotel Leela Kempinski, Mumbai. The man always stayed ahead of the curve, didn’t he?
