Hello,
Greetings and this is my first post on the forum. I am having a issue with my home theater setup and I came here to get some wise advice from the experts.

I have a PS3 that is connected to my Samsung LED TV via HDMI cable. The sound setting in PS3 is set to HDMI. I have connected my Samsung LED TV to my Yamaha HTR5730 receiver via the optical cable.

So now when I play any BD from PS3 or any HD movies from external hard disk (connected to my TV), I am not getting the 5.1 surround on my Bose system.

Has anyone have similar setup and managed to get the 5.1 surround? Please advise.

Thanks,
Venkat R.

Hi Venkat

May be your TV not support all sound formats.

Try to Connect the optical o/p & HDMI from PS3 to your AVR and to your TV.
you will get the 5.1

Hope this helps

What the setup you have? Is it the AVR-> Bose speakers or you have seperate speaker for Yamaha AVR? And do you get 5.1 sound when you play BD movies without using Pro Logic II or similar processor? Also please check the TV manual if it supports DTS decoding. If not does it bypass the signal? because PS3 games are DTS decoded.

You are not doing it right. The connection should be: PS3 -> AVR -> TV (using two HDMI cables).

That is correct, I agree. Also if you do not intend to change the current connection there should be a setting in PS3 set to BITSTREAM which sends the encoded signal as is via HDMI, try changing it to LPCM / PCM and see if your AVR outputs the sound

Either use this suggestion, or connect the Optical cable from the PS3 to the AV Receiver, and enable Audio Multi Out, so that you can listen in 5.1 surround with your speakers, or whenever you do not wish to listen to surround sound, you still get sound via the TV speakers.

All,
Thanks for the replies.
snkadh -> The setup I have is AVR-> Bose speakers. For BD movies, I see all channels lighten up in the receiver panel - but there is no sound in the rear channel. I am not sure which sound setting I used.

vasishta.sushant vasishta.sushant -> Unfortunately I do not have HDMI slots in my receiver - its 10 years old. But I am not sure with your reply. how will this work
- PS3 -> AVR -> TV? PS3 to AVR is fine but AVR to TV?? Should this be TV to AVR??

haisaikat haisaikat is offline -> For LPCM / PCM there are many options in PS3 - not sure which one to choose?

Just another bit of information - In my Samsung LED TV - no matter what I cant enable the setting where it says 'Dolby Digital' - May be i will check the sound options in PS3 when connecting via HDMI / optical.

Thanks,
Venkat R.

If your receiver is old, connect an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver, and enable Audio Multi Out on the PS3. Keep the HDMI connected from PS3 to the TV.

PS3->AVR->TV that was mentioned, was meant to be connected with 2 HDMI cables, so the audio and video would be carried from the PS3 to the AVR, which would then strip the audio and pass on just the video signal to the TV. If the TV and AVR were both ARC (Audio Return Channel)-enabled, then you could also hear the sound from your hard disk movies (played on the TV) via the AVR speakers. However, since your AVR doesn't have HDMI inputs or output, this point is moot.

Another thing to note, if all channels are lit up on the AVR display panel, then it is likely that you are already getting surround sound on the AVR, routed via the TV. In that case, the absence of sound in the rear channels might be due to the movie soundtrack having less audio data in the rear channels. Usually, the rear channels come into play only when surround effects are required, usually in action scenes, or maybe when a fighter jet goes flying by.

Hi -> Thanks for the resonse and clarifications.

If your receiver is old, connect an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver, and enable Audio Multi Out on the PS3. Keep the HDMI connected from PS3 to the TV.

This is my current settings.

Its been ages since I opened the support manual - Will read it through this week probably :)

Thanks.

Regarding LPCM, if you can let me know which all settings have this option I can assist in setting up the correct one,. But in general PS3 does have a Audio setup wizard if you can find that
