with dvds, i have often found them to be of inferior quality (sound, picture etc) when compared to their counterparts abroad. i am not talking about local films by moser bauer etc, but hollywood movies selling for rs 300 to rs 500 in shops like landmark.

in this context, i would like to know if bluray discs suffer a similar fault. and what are the companies which manufacture bluray discs in india and any comparison with regards quality between them.

appreciate the feedback.

Hi Nanda, blu-ray technology is very expensive and they are not manufactured in India. So, there is no change in PQ and SQ in comparison with what is available abroad. However, when you buy from US or UK, there will be a lot extras in the movie, which may be missing in blu-rays bought in India. By extras, I mean specials, unedited scenes, making of the movie, digital copy and sometimes even a DVD of the same movie.

Even the DVD cover print quality is inferior, infact they do the same to international CDs (and earlier cassettes)...

I bought 5 Blu-rays in India, i.e. Transformers (single disc compare to 2 disc in US/UK), King Kong, The Rock, Top Gun. There is absolutely no difference in PQ/SQ for sure. Except Transformers, all other are same single disc package available in US/UK.
5th one being DDLJ which anyway you've to buy in India only.

The differences I noticed in DVDs available in India:
1. The DVD cases are of inferior quality and mostly come in transparent clear case. While Region 1 or 2 DVDs comes in good quality black cases.
2. The price will be always printed in INR in the back cover (the same with blu-ray discs in India).
3. Some movies heavily censored while unrated/uncut versions available in Region 1.
4. Data errors in DVDs are common issue once they started replicating them in India.
5. Like mentioned in previous post, the cover inlay print quality is inferior.
6. Not all special editions are released in India.

Blu-ray discs are imported right now hence no much difference in disc quality. Still point 2,3 and 6 above are applicable to blu-rays available in India also.

AFAIK Sony is the only Bluray manufacturer in india. BTW just bought Alice in Wonderland for 799/- with a free DVD copy. PQ/AQ is top notch.
