I have 2 queries:

(1)
I have the following things connected to my Yamaha YHT-196:

BluRay Player - Samsung BD-F6500 (which has capability of 7.1Ch Output)
STB - Tata Sky HD
TV - Samsung 32" LCD (I forgot the product code )

So what is the best way to connecting these

Right now I have connected:
BluRay O/P - HT I/P via HDMI
STB O/P - HT I/P via HDMI
HT O/P - TV I/P via HDMI
TV O/P - HT I/P via Optical

Is this Ok?
Or should I make some changes to get better output from the whole system?

(2)
I have attached the image of the arrangement of TV, Sub-woofer and the speakers, as well as the seating arrangement in my living room

Please suggest if I need to make some changes to get a better 7.1ch output experience

Your setup is fine. I had the Yamaha YHT 196 sometime back and I used exactly the same set up. However my D2H didnot support 5.1 over HDMI and hence had to connect to AVR using a coaxial cable.

IMO ......YHT 196 doesnot support 7.1. I am not sure if there has been some recent changes in the new model.

Hi Vikrant..
Hope this may help u.
I think TV O/P - HT I/P via Optical is not necessary since u have already connected HT O/P - TV I/P via HDMI ,so the AVR takes all the input from Bluray & STB and gives the video to the TV and sound through the speakers..

If space is there try to put the subwoofer in the corner of the room (i.e behind ur TV corner) this may increase the performance of subwoofer ..
The center channel speaker should be kept in front of TV (so that the voices will come from the TV)
Seeing ur sketch it represents 5.1 speaker system (ofcourse YHT196 is 5.1) so dont expect 7.1 in it .
The AVR converts to 5.1 if any 7.1 content is played.

Actually the reason I connected TV O/P - HT I/P via Optical was, that if I want to connect a USB to my TV for watching movie/ listen music, I can get that output through the Home Theater.

I normally connect the USB to the BluRay and get the Output through the Home Theater via HDMI, but I wanted an extra USB option too

I forgot to mention, the centre channel speaker is kept infront of the TV

Yeah YHT-196 supports 5.1 only , but if I connect a couple of Speakers as surround ones, should that help a bit?

With YHT 196 -5.1 is the maximum ... if u want 7.1 then u may go for higher versions of AVR which supports 7.1.
7.1 may be required for lengthy roooms ...otherwise 5.1 is morethan enough...enjoy with YHT196.. and share ur experience.

Okay,

I will settle with 5.1 configuration, that's not much of a compromise.

But I wanted a confirmation whether the way I have connected the devices is okay, and whether the location of the Speakers is okay.

Actually, the reason I am reconfirming the connections is that...

Somehow I do not get the same feeling after hearing the music files on the Home Theaters.

like I get after I hear it on my Headphones

Maybe I am expecting too much, but I am feeling that I missing something somewhere...

HT O/P - TV I/P via HDMI
TV O/P - HT I/P via Optical

Practically, makes better sense to connect STB to TV via HDMI and an optical from STB to HT.

The reason being is that you wouldnt be using the TV with the HT always on (esp. while watching news, general programs). Switch on the HT as needed and coax will be good enough for what the stb sound gives.

Who has done the initial setup for you? I believe, 196 doesn't come with YPAO so thats not an option for you. May be you should try to tweak the settings further. Speaker distances, levels, EQ settings and crossover.

I have got my installation done thru Yamaha person. He had suggested me to keep in "Stereo" or "Stereo enhancer" mode when playing music files. I have tried it and for me music output is good. You may wish to give a try.

Also, are you getting surround effect for 5.1 movies? if not, then, need to recheck your setting.
