Folks

Have planned a road trip to Madurai and Trichy next week, and forum members in any of these locations? Second any suggestions about decent accommodation and good eating places-could be good veg Madras meals or Chettinadu stuff. Havent yet decided whether we will spend overnight at both these places or only one of them-plan is to visit Meenakshi and Srirangam temples.

TIA

I dont know I am replying late. I am from Madurai, though I am currently in Mumbai for a long time.

Following are some places to check for stay and dine

- Veg and Non-Veg

- Only Veg

Kumar Mess (There are two - One small does not have good ambience. Other one with parking facility has ac hall for dining) - Chettinad Non-Veg

Prem Nivas - Roof Top

Hotel Supreme - RoofTop (near Prem Nivas Hotel)

I think both supreme and prem nivas server beer in the restaurant

Supreme and Prem Nivas are decent for stay too. In case of any help required, drop me a PM.

Stayed at Fortune Pandiyan, visited Madurai Meenakshi temple and was mighty impressed. Reached a bit too late for traditional saapad-had lunch instead at Theni. Returned via Trichy and visiting Srirangam Temple( Sree Ranganathat Swamy Temple), which I had visited about 25 years ago , but was still dismayed at how commercial it remains..

Had dinner and breakfast at Pandiyan-they ghave a decent poolside BBQ place and a nice complimentary buffet breakfast. The Madurai idli definitely was one of the better ones I've had, though there wasnt any Pongal on offer. On outr way back had excellent lunch at Namakkal-at Vangili Residency. Vatha kolumbu was top class.

I visited SriRangam in November and was really disappointed by how commercial the temple was. Most priests were expecting/demanding a donation and it was difficult to pray in peace

Sorry, missed your earlier post and couldn't help you. I visited bith places recently and I found Rockfort temple to be VFM :-), especially in the night. The only saving grace in Srirangam was the carvings outside.
