I need to upgrade the memory in my pc. The processor is a bit old, intel E6300 Conroe, 1.8ghz, FSB 1066mhz. The mobo is biostar tp43e combo. It supports both ddr2 and ddr3 (not at the same time). I am currently using a single chip 2gb ddr2 ram. I want to upgrade to 2x2gb ddr3 1333 mhz RAM. I want to know if these are compatible. The mobo supports this memory. Do i need support from the cpu also for this upgrade (I remember reading somewhere that fsb frequency is relevant to this, cant remember) or is that irrelevant. If I cant use this, whats the best option.

It will work. Processor is not a problem. Motherboard also supports DDR3 1333 Mhz RAM. So upgrade should not be a problem. However according to current market prices,

2 x 2 GB DDR3 = 1300 Rs Approx,
and 1 x 2 GB DDR2 = 1350 Rs Approx,

Also you will not notice any difference in performance if you upgrade from DDR2 to DDR3, given that the total amount of RAM remains same in both cases.

Your choice to buy 2 x 2 GB DDR3 or buy 1 2GB DDR2. IMO, performance gain with both options will be almost same.

Further to what Vaibhav has said. I'd like to emphasize that investing in good quality RAM (freq and latency wise) is the way to go...brands like G.skill, Corsair are VFM and are easily available.

just my 2cents

i was eyeing the corsair vs series. pretty cheap. how's gskill, havent heard too much about this brand.

I recently bought corsair 4GB DDR3 Value Select RAM for Rs.1190/-. Vengeance is available for around 1.7K.

Found a dealer in Bangalore who is offering 2GB DDR2 800MHz with lifetime warranty for around Rs.650 only. So that could be a cheaper option than getting 2x 2GB DDR3.

Further, I am trying to understand the need for the upgrade as for PCs with fast 7200RPM HDDs we don't really need more than 2 GB. Mostly Laptops need 3 to 4GB to perform reasonably.

For Video Playback including BR ISOs, its a waste of funds upgrading to more than 2GB RAM!

Only very high end Games can really benefit from reducing VMM Swapping and you may gain performance if you do a lot of multitasking like running 50+ browsing windows or Video Editing.

Also, remember that running 4GB or more RAM, you need to install a 64bit OS or else you would loose almost 1GB of RAM.

Corsair is a tried and tested name so you cant go wrong with it...on the other hand G.skill ripjaws is a hit with gaming and OC and is freq discussed in many forums. If you intend to use your machine for everyday computing and as a media PC then dont bother too much, just go with Corsair vs or get corsair vengeance and you'll be fine.

Do you have a dedicated GPU ? you may want to upgrade your PSU if you have those stock types which are bundled with cabinets.

i will take 2 of those. will pay you shipping :) Just hope is not confusing 1 GB price for 2 GB price

i upgraded my desktop from 1 x 2 GB DDR2 tp 2 x 2 GB DDR2, i saw instant decrease in shutdown times. NFS HP Runs a lot smoother in scenes where there was a lot of landscape. So there will be increase in performance for gaming. For 1080P. 2 GB is more than enough

I can't say if the dealer confused it, but he was confident. However I know another source - a distributor friend of mine offering Transcend 2GB DDR2 for around 1000 with 3 years warranty and can ship to you if you want. You could PM me your contact info and I can confirm and let you know. However, you already have 4GB, do you really need it :)

What is the frequency of a RAM?
Will a 1600Mhz specified RAM work in a MB which has specification for 1333Mhz?

I am running 32 bit windows 7. I often open tons of browser windows and that makes responses very slow. sometimes others in my home try to login too and that makes it crawl. My son cant play games (simple kiddie games). I know 32 bit windows only supports upto 3gb, but I plan to upgrade to 64 bit someday. I was running it with 3gb earlier but with the mobo upgrade, the 1gb 533mhz chip became useless as it isnt supported.
I want to go for ddr3 as ddr2 is only going to become rare to find and super expensive. The current 2g chip I will transfer to my htpc and that will also have 4gb then.:)
i already have a good psu and a gpu. I had to go for a gpu as after buying the mobo, I realized that the piece of crap didnt even have a vga port.

Certainly, yes. And it may run faster than a 1333MHz RAM(depending on supported timing at 1333MHz on its SPD).

Ok as I understand, you have use for that 2GB DDR2. However, I would not recommend upgrading your HTPC to 4GB unless you have USE for it! Else it will be useless only for HTPC setup. We might be able to get 2GB DDR2 for as little as Rs.900 and whenever you upgrade to DDR3, I can get a buy back arrange for that DDR2 which will most probably sell for more than what we would get the DDR3 for!;)
