Hey again...

I'm planning to buy Onkyo HT-S3300 and use my PC as HTPC.

I've got Palit 9600GT and Gigabyte G31 mobo
So i've connected internally via 2-pin spdif cable which i got with my graphics card. I can get the audio on my Sony LCD (40EX400) via DVI->HDMI adapter now which is decoded in PC (to PCM, i guess).

I want to ask which audio(s) it'll pass through?
On my search on Google I found this: 2 channel stereo and compressed 5.1 channel...
So I guess this means: 5.1 AC3 640kbps & DTS 1.5mbps will be passthroughed <-- Please someone confirm this!!!!!
and lossless audios like DTS HD-MA/True-HD/LPCM wont be bitstreamed...

I'm in least preference of buying an audio card now if for now 5.1 DTS/AC3 passthrough works with my current setup.
If it doesn't works, then which Audio Card is recommended for my setup considering I've only one PCI Express x1 slot and one PCI slot. So it should be compatible with this
My budget for Audio Card is as least as possible but at same time good and efficient card. Is Xonar DX necessary to get better sound via passthrough, i guess xonar dont need to process audio in passsthrough, so cheaper ones then that will also do.

Thanks & Regards

At the outset, there is no such word as 'passthroughed'. If at all you want to use a past tense for pass through, use 'passed through'.

If the internal connection from the motherboard to your Palit card is through S/PDIF, you will be using the sound system of the motherboard. In addition, since the internal connection is S/PDIF, you will not get DTS MA, and TrueHD. All HD audio will be downscaled to DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1

Depending upon your settings you can send the audio data as raw (bitstream) or as PCM. Remember, PCM is a digital carrier of audio that is decoded at the source - in your case on your PC.

If you want HD audio in raw format, you have look at the specs of your card, or get a card that is capable of outputting HD Audio as bitstream.

A good card is Asus Xonar HDAV.

Cheers

Yeah i guess i got that it wont do HD Audio, and just wanted to confirm whether it'll do that 5.1 DTS or DD or not!!!

It looks like a Rs. 10k+ solution. :(
Isnt it possible that I pass video through gfx card via HDMI cable; and audio through audio card via Optical cable?? just like normally video is sent to LCD and audio to speakers

You can look at Zotac HD-ID40... or Zotac model newly launched with bluray.

You can certainly try. Generally when you insert a graphics card, it sets off all sound and video output from the motherboard. So I am not sure it will work. It may, though.

It is possible. No problem.

But how is it that you managed to get audio over a DVI to HDMI cable? I thought DVI could not carry audio???

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
