My collection primarily consists of Indian released cd/dvd which I use on pc now.
I am considering going for a blu ray player.
Do I need a region free one?
I want it to support all my cd/dvd as well as usb disks in various formats. Audio and data audio should also work.
A friend's brother may come from singapore in some days who can be asked to bring too.
Do let me know the options. Thanks.

Hi Hildebrand,

Suggestions are plenty, however, you need to be more specific.

1) Connectivity thru HDMI or analogue?
2) Budget?
3) Region free for Blu ray/DVD is a must?
4) What do you plan to connect it to like AVR etc?
5) Existing set up so that other FMs can make suggestions.\
6) What existing software do you have? Meaning DVD/Blu ray/FLACs etc.

Thanks

Hi Vinod

Suggestions are plenty, however, you need to be more specific.

1) Connectivity thru HDMI or analogue?

My TV has both an HDMI as well as analog input.

2) Budget?
I don't wish to spend much money on it as I will not use it much. A few thousand would be fine but I will consider a higher one if it sounds good for which I will save for sometime before buying. Of course, I don't want to spend more money if it is not required to be spent as I have been spending lots of money on other stuff so savings would help..

3) Region free for Blu ray/DVD is a must?
I am not very clear on this. As I said above almost all my movie VCDs and DVDs were all made by Indian companies. I usually don't buy Hollywood disks and prefer to get their soft copies from friends/net to view them. I don't know if this is really a must for me.

4) What do you plan to connect it to like AVR etc?
No I don't intend to connect it to an AVR as I don't have or want a HT setup. I will probably connect it to my stereo setup (for the audio part) and my TV (for the video part).

5) Existing set up so that other FMs can make suggestions.\
My current setup is as follows:-
TV Setup: LG 32" TV + Tatasky Plus Settop box
Stereo Setup: Norge 2060 amp + Norge New Millenium Mk II Speakers (Arriving next week)

The amp has AUX / CD / DVD inputs only.

I don't remember the TV model number though. It has HDMI and video/audio inputs. The remote menu has four input options HDMI, AV, TV and Component. Its a wall mounted display type so I can't see the rear connections and must be HD compatible as it has a 16:9 resolution setting.

6) What existing software do you have? Meaning DVD/Blu ray/FLACs etc.
I have no Blu Rays and very few FLAC files.
I have 100+ VCDs and DVDs of Indian films in various languages.
I also have hundreds of movies from around the world in digital formats like AVI, DIVX, MKV, MPEG1, MP4 etc.
I also have many Audio as well as mp3 CDs. Some of my stuff is on data CD/DVD also.

Wouldn't mind if youtube could be played with the player (Need not be wifi. I don't mind connecting a LAN connection from my wifi modem).

I hope you will be able to guide me better now with all these details.

I think any reasonable player with HDMI and two channel analogue input would do.

A "Sony" or "Philips" player would be a good bet. I do not know the series but it should be a good call. Roughly 5000-7000 rupees. Someone recently imported a Sony and is pretty happy with it. Check the thread out in our forum.

Also lots of people are selling of their blu ray players on this forum. It is really value for money as our FMs know their players :), the only reason they sell is they are moving to hard disk based formats.

Going by the looks of the specs of the newly available BDP-160, It maybe a strong contender to meet my requirements. These are its specs:-

If someone has any other models to suggest do let me know. Thanks.

Hi Hildebrand,

I use both Pioneers, the BDP 150 and BDP LX 55 and through experience can say that the players are excellent. The Disc pickup and play is quite fast and there is very good audio and video clarity. I do play a lot of videos, music content from the external 1 TB hard drive which is connected through the USB port and everything plays like a breeze with no issues. The advantage of the players is that you can update the firmware later as it gets released to improve certain features or functionality of the player....true value for money...

Would appreciate if FMs could share their experiences with the BDP-160 including with Indian disks. (Reviews on the locally available player and the imported Region-A player welcome)
