I want to carry in a TV from Bangkok on Jet Airways.

I was shocked to check Jet Airways' baggage allowance.

The L+W+H should not add up to more than 62 inches! If it does, they charge USD 150 + 4% taxes!

Only a 32 inch TV will fall below this dimension!

Besides, they have handling charges for TVs bigger than 40 Inchers. 40-49 Inchers - THB 1000 handling charges!

I want to know has anybody flown Jet Airways recently from BKK to India with TVs? What's the actual on-ground policy? Do they diligently charge the 150 USD amount? I've seen people bring in really big TVs - do they all pay the 150 USD?

Seeing all this, I feel it almost doesn't make sense to buy from BKK anymore!

Alfa in Vile Parle West Mumbai will probably be my next destination to check out GM prices.

I have found buying large items locally to be the best method. Almost all good brands are available locally and one gets the service support too. Difference in price is not worth the trouble in most cases.

I have bought items like DAC, Network player etc overseas but all my speakers, large screen TVs and similar items locally.

Jet charges all TVs measuring 40 inches & above a flat rate of OMR 17 per piece, OMR 1 = USD 2.58.

That's different. The handling charge for me would br THB 1000 which would still be OK. But the oversized baggage charge of 150USD is what kills the deal here.

Jet has a different carriage charges for TV bigger than 40". I think it is different from different country. It is not counted among the regular bagages except for the weight. Let's say you are buying a 55" TV. Then they will charge a flat rate for the same. Now the TV weight is 35KG. Then along with your other baggage if it crosses the limit, then pay for the extra weight as well. BTW, the charges from Singapore was quite steep for Jet at around SGD200 or so if I can remember correctly as of last year. Which is as close to Rs 9000/-.

Somebody known to me brought tv via indigo from Bangkok to India. If i remember correctly, the airline charged about 2k extra for shipping the tv.

I got a Tv via Thai Air, the didnt charge me anything extra.

Not sure about other airlines, it may be better to talk to their call centre once.

The large tvmanufacturers want to discourage people from buying tvs abroad. There was an article in the economic times stating that tv companies are taking several measures to stop this practice. The reason being that thousands of tvs are being carried by people from abroad thereby reducing the exorbitant profits that they can earn here otherwise.

Thanks. Have seen this. I wanna carry in a 42 incher from Bangkok. Do I have to pay the 1000 THB only or 1000 THB + oversize baggage charges? A 42 incher will not overshoot the max. dimensions with a wide margin. My question is do they actually measure the dimensions of the TV? I want some live examples of folks who have been in this situation, so that they can tell me how Jet Airways behaves.

buy the tvs from alfa as the price difference not much why lug around a large tv whenu can get it at alfa for few thousand more unless the price difference between alfa and bkk is very high does it make sense to bring a tv along.

They charge for extra baggage also. My friend bought a 42" Sony LED and he had to pay 800 THB and oversize baggage charges of $90. This was in Mumbai airport.

I was charged 5000 Bahts by Jet Airways for Sony 55 inch led TV in August 2011 because of big size. We were two passengers with no other luggage. First of all said they would not load the same and agreed at a very later stage to load the same. Then unfortunately not much time was left to take VAT refund. Last year in November 2012 we bought a Samsung 55 inch LED TV by Bangkok Airways. Bangkok Airways officially allows 25 kgs as check in baggage plus nothing extra was charged for the 55 inch LED TV. So please check with Airline or friends before bringing in 55 inch TV from Bangkok.

All I can say is, if the goal is to buy a TV abroad and bring it to India, then it is better to check upfront on various companies baggage policies. After all, we do check the fares and usually go with the cheapest.

yesterday somebody known to me brought 42 inches sony led 3d tv from bangkok through thai air, they didnt pay any extra amount to the airline.

i brought 40 inches Led 3d tv through thai air about 3 months back....they didnt charge me anything...

but mumbai customs...thats a different story ;)

That is true enough. But we are specifically talking about Jet Airways and their baggage allowance policy.
