Earlier this week, Samsung started rolling out a software update to some of its soundbars, including Q800D, Q990D, and Q995D. It carried firmware version 1020. Well, people are now reporting that after installing the update, for which the brand didn't provide a changelog, their soundbar has stopped working.

According to people on Samsung’s Community forum and Reddit, once they installed the update, their soundbar’s display showed them the welcome message (“Hello“) and then the input source. However, their TV didn’t recognize the soundbar. As such, it changed the sound output to the inbuilt speakers.

When they tried to change the volume or turn the soundbar off using the remote to troubleshoot the issue, the soundbar didn’t respond. Using the buttons on the soundbar to control it didn’t work either. People also tried disconnecting the power cable and reconnecting it to solve the issue, but that also didn’t work. Sadly, that was the end of the road for them.

A few people went through different scenarios but the result was the same. The soundbar stopped responding and they weren’t able to play sound through it. When people contacted Samsung, the customer support didn’t have an answer for them. They were told that the issue has been forwarded to the warranty team and they were waiting for a response.

This issue is widespread and people are very disappointed that Samsung hasn’t provided them a solution yet. From what we could gather, the update has bricked these soundbars and Samsung will most probably have to replace them. We hope that the brand provides a solution to units that are and aren’t in the warranty as it is Samsung's fault.

My 1 month old Samsung Soundbar Q930D got bricked after the update. Samsung technician came and said that PCB needs to be replaced. Awaiting for the part to arrive. I would strongly advise people not to update till this is sorted . As per information on net it is affecting the q series Soundbar D series . My q990c is ok , no fresh update for it. Would also like to know if this has happened to anyone else.

Update - Today the Samsung technician changed the PCB of my soundbar . It is functioning normally now. It has been updated to 1016 ver as 1020.7 update has been rolled back. Keeping my fingers crossed. I am quite impressed with the samsung service which was quite smooth and fast .

The question is about the soundbars that are out of warranty. Will Samsung offer a free solution to such customers?

If it's a widespread issue they do offer free replacement outside warranty, however impose tonnes of unrelated pre check ( basis of mobile replacement experience).

I had a Samsung s20 plus, a similar buggy software update caused green lines to appear on screen ( similar issue occurred for one plus phones too). They refused warranty just since the body had hairline scratches ( not the screen but the body) , had to escalate to Samsung customer care and their higher ups to get it freely replaced outside warranty.

My situation as described did not fall into that category so I really can't tell you what course of action samsung will take.

Itz a kind of forcing to upgrade, for sure they will not replace free of cost or otherwise they have to pay the service charges and get it repaired. Similar things happened earlier( long back) for phones when we upgrade.

Fortunately as i could gather this is affecting the D series (2024) of soundbar so majority of them will be in warranty . My 990c is out of warranty but no update was pushed for it so it's okay. It's PCB costs 17k. Would be really bad if I had to shell out money for no fault of ours
