While testing Samsung 3D TVs recently, I noticed that the brightness suffered when I switched on the 3D feature - the pictures were much brighter when viewing in normal 2D. Why this loss of brightness?

You need to calibrate the settings properly to get the best light output. Out of the box the settings are not very good. Proper calibration is most important. That said, 3d causes a decrease in brightness and contrast whatever you do but that can be minimized.

Yes, I have also observed the same phenomena but couldn't realize about re-setting a picture brightness. But then each time this switching is required or 3D's setting will remain independent of normal view?

Was there any change in picture settings when you viewed in 3D? One possible reason for reduced brightness may be the way active 3D works - where each frame that reaches the eyes is alternated by a completely black frame - to reduce the chances of crosstalk. This may reduce the brightness when 3D mode is active - sensitive eyes can actually perceive the change. Passive 3D TVs such as LG 3D TV and Toshiba have a brighter output even in 3D mode.
