Hi all,

I am evaluating the LED/Plasmas available in the market to replace my current 21" CRT TV.

From the feedback seen on avs forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1322999) and even on amazon about this TV, the Samsung Plasma models 43D450/D490 are seems to be reasonably good models under Rs.45k.

Though the model isn't full HD, I assume that's irrelevant if we mostly watch our standard SD channels and also view HD/play games beyond 5/6 ft distance.

Is it a good model to buy??? Any known issues with this model??

Any advice/thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Re: Samsung 43D450 - Reasonably priced, why no takers? - decided & bought now!!!

All,

Took the decision and bought this model(samsung plasma d450 43") last night. Expecting delivery tomorrow. Will keep you all posted on initial reviews.

I was able to compare the picture quality of this model with other leading LEDs and also with v20. Except v20 no other tv was able to match this tv. Even the high end Sony & lg led TVA looked pathetic in SD channel upscaling, which I will be using 80% of the time.

Was able to negotiate almost 4k cheaper than the price offered in samsung showroom, girias, vasanth etc. Who offered this for 42k. Infact, the current dealer also specified the same price but was able to bring the price down.

Any advice initial run-in period for these new 2011 plasma models (low settings for first 200 hours)?

Cheers,

Mighty

Yeah, it is a good tv but sadly there isn't much awareness about it in India. People have compared it with 42x30 and said its better! The only downer is 1024x768 resolution. Should have been 1366x768 atleast.

And for the breakin/settings read the thread you posted!

All plasmas are HD as anything which is able to show picture of 720p is classified as HD. The standard resolution is 1024 x 768 in plasmas. Some of the bigger screens will sport Full HD. For SD purposes nothing beats a plasma. Well nowdays the in thing is LED with local dimming. Lets see whats there further down the road. Maybe OLEDs/SEDs

A FULL HD plasma is just as bad as a FHD lcd in SD.
Lcds in torch mode can easily show how bad the source is vs dimmer plasma next to it.

If i crank up the brightness in my lcd i can easily spot the artifacts even with Reliance digital which has the best quality compared to others.

Also when one see a plasma at close distance due to the way plasma show color by dithering,it may mask the artifacts compared to the super sharp lcds set in torch mode.

1024x768 is 4:3 and most of the content today is 16:9. Therefore there is loss of quality due to non-uniform scaling. If it were 1366x768, the scaling would have been uniform at-least. I hope next year we will get to see a true widescreen 42" plasma under 40k!

Hi Mighty

Where did you buy in chennai?
Got it for 42k? or 38k?
Can you please share your thoughts about 43D490??

-Pramod

Hi Pramod,

I bought at croma, mount road chennai. The final price was 38.5k.

I didn't check the 3d aspect of 43d490 though that's the model displayed in the showroom. You may wanna take a look at it before u make a decision.

For me, I want to stick with 2d as of now and the pic quality is top most priority than anything else.

And, for my viewing distance of 8+ feet and 80% of SD channels, this model will meet my requirements.

Will post feedback once installed and reviewed.

Cheers,
Mighty

42v20 panasonic is available for 53k in chroma, regarded as one of the best plasmas. Full HD as well. Buying anything in +/- 10k would require a TV to be real gem pitted against v20. Therefore, I purchased one 42v20 for my bedroom. It got installed on sunday, and watched X-men on blu-ray. Excellent colors! Wife is loving it, daughter is hating the fact that papa got it for my room and mamma snatched it away.

Sorry, Redflag!

The TV was finally installed yesterday evening and I was playing around with settings, various input sources etc.

2.30 - Samsung guy came in, fixed everything in less than 20 mins.
3.00 - Power cut before we test any picture output. Luckily, minutes before he set the time/date and changed mode from demo to home.
4.00 - Started connecting and testing on my own.

SD - SCV cable - Initially fuzzy. Tweaked settings both in TV as well as in STB. looked great after that. The picture quality is almost equivalent to my old 21" CRT television, excluding few crap channels.

DVD - Tried few DVDs I had (Not original DVD prints though). Connected using component AV cable only. Picture quality looked decent but won't say awesome.

USB - Tried one web downloaded sample of 1920*1080 quality (Nvidia 1080p video sample from youtube). Looked great. But I won't say it's similar to the blue-ray or demo clips, I used to see in LED/high end Plasmas in showrooms. Need to analyze the reason for that.

BTW, my viewing distance is approx. 7 to 8 feet.

Need to analyze and tweak more in next few days. Few items on list are:
1. Get a media player with HDMI output and see if that improves the quality of picture for full HD/blue ray movies.
2. Try connecting the DVD and Set-top box with three colored cables separately (G,Y,R) and see if improvement is visible.

Will keep you all posted. Photos will be posted soon.

So far good.

Mighty

Torch mode? :D Guess you are talking about that ugly Dynamic mode :)

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
