I am upgrading my speakers and want to send the exiting towers to my brother in Mumbai. Plz help.

I've never shipped heavy items via India Post but thought they're quite cheap and have insurance and stuff so won't be a problem. Few online stores used to ship via India Post for heavier items like Technoguru not sure if they use that now.

If you want cheaper but reliable, I'm not sure what to suggest. Overnite / DTDC / AFL / Professional / Quantium / ExpressIT are there. You can get quote from them.

If you want your speakers to reach safely then understand that regardless if the shipping company you choose, the people actually handling them would be labourers and transport people who don't even know the instructions written on parcels. Throwing around the parcels gets the work done faster.

Pack the speakers in their original cartons if you have them, next wrap them in foam all over, place the wrapped speaker cartons in wooden crates. Choose the transport mode where you feel that they would be handled least. Send them and thank your stars if they reach safely.

I have got speakers damaged in their original cartons due to flooding of the storage area, a damaged CD player due to some metal rod/corner that was able to enter the space between wood in a wooden crating and damage the display, even a speaker that lost all the packing on the way and ended up in a polythene packet. (The companies I had used were different for all these instances.)

never use the original equipment packing and box for shipping, that will be a disaster waiting to happen

for speakers, first place the speakers in their original factory packaging, place packed speakers in solid wooden crate (with reinforced corners) and with adequate padding and filling (to prevent the inner box from floating around). Then use moovers and packers to ship. Courier companies are generally extremely careless with packages (because contract labourers handle them). Movers and Packers usually have their own staff. I moved 2 huge and heavy B&W DM3000 speakers from Bangalore to Trivandrum. The packaging was done by FM Santhosh which was fantastic. I accompanied the speakers and ensured that the boxes were handled in my presence. Right from Bangalore, all the way to Trivandrum, many people from the transporter, including the driver of the bus, tried to rip me off (asking for money) but I kept my cool and blotched all their moves. Got the speakers carried in the storage compartment of the bus to Trivandrum for Rs.1200 (the cost of a ticket for 1 person). Spent another 200 (100 each at Bangalore and Trivandrum) on help to carry these boxes. All said and done, the experience of transporting the speakers, was terrible and I don't want to ever repeat it. Also the speakers were not to my likiing and I sold them off. The overall effort was wasted.

Lesson learnt overall (not just on the B&W transaction) - (1) buy speakers only after you've heard them, (2) avoid vintage pre-used if the speakers have changed many hands and have been through restoration - always demand ownership history, (3) buy locally to avoid the hassles of transportation, (4) avoid re-sellers and brokers for all you know, you'll be buying un-professionally re-furbished stuff
