never use the original equipment packing and box for shipping, that will be a disaster waiting to happen
for speakers, first place the speakers in their original factory packaging, place packed speakers in solid wooden crate (with reinforced corners) and with adequate padding and filling (to prevent the inner box from floating around). Then use moovers and packers to ship. Courier companies are generally extremely careless with packages (because contract labourers handle them). Movers and Packers usually have their own staff. I moved 2 huge and heavy B&W DM3000 speakers from Bangalore to Trivandrum. The packaging was done by FM Santhosh which was fantastic. I accompanied the speakers and ensured that the boxes were handled in my presence. Right from Bangalore, all the way to Trivandrum, many people from the transporter, including the driver of the bus, tried to rip me off (asking for money) but I kept my cool and blotched all their moves. Got the speakers carried in the storage compartment of the bus to Trivandrum for Rs.1200 (the cost of a ticket for 1 person). Spent another 200 (100 each at Bangalore and Trivandrum) on help to carry these boxes. All said and done, the experience of transporting the speakers, was terrible and I don't want to ever repeat it. Also the speakers were not to my likiing and I sold them off. The overall effort was wasted.
Lesson learnt overall (not just on the B&W transaction) - (1) buy speakers only after you've heard them, (2) avoid vintage pre-used if the speakers have changed many hands and have been through restoration - always demand ownership history, (3) buy locally to avoid the hassles of transportation, (4) avoid re-sellers and brokers for all you know, you'll be buying un-professionally re-furbished stuff
