A cousin of mine is looking for typical 4 to 6 month business leadership programs. He looked at the IIM programs and many are not suitable. Are there good alternatives to IIM? Prefer Bangalore.

try some of the online courses like Coursera. They will be better than what the IIMs will have to offer for sure.

It would depend upon what ones looking for. 4-6 months is not enough time for a business leadership program.

If he is looking at specific skillsets, then coursera should be good.

However, I would recommend the 12 month online plus a few weeks in campus type programs from the IIM/XLRI if he has had enough business experience, else the fulltime programs.

Thanks guys. He is also looking at the 1 year executive management programs. IIM etc.

What are the options apart from IIM in Bangalore ?

The remote classroom plus 1 month or so campus is there with all the IIMs. You typically sit in a online classroom (With NIIT, Hughes....) where the prof teaches. These happen in designated cities including Bangalore.

strongly recommend something from a brand name inst (IIM etc)
the main value of the mba is not the education (which you can get anywhere), but rather the IIM tag to your name which opens a lot of professional opportunities

Here are some of the top 1 year full time Business programs offered in India. I am not raking them in any specific order:
- IIMA
- IIMB
- IIMC
- IIML (Noida campus)
- ISB
- SPJain
- XLRI
- Great Lakes

All the above courses require a valid GMAT score and some prior work experience. This varies between 5-10 years (for the IIMs, XLRI) and between 2-5 years (SPJain, ISB, Great Lakes). The admission process is quite similar to international MBAs programs - GMAT, essays and an interview.

All of the above programs are worth the money spent, and give you a top class alumni network.

Best,
APK

i'd look at ISB.

from an infrastructure and faculty perspective, they are pretty good. and it's a one year course.

If you are advising your cousin, it may be worthwhile to understand why he is desirous of specifically this kind of program, is it a feeling that the CV is not heavyweight enough, has this been pointed out as a shortcoming in a performance appraisal, or it is self driven desire for knowledge enhancement.

once that driving / motivating factor is understood, it might be easier to suggest appropriately. as well as what other constraints govern choice - location clearly seems to be one; budget, duration etc could be others.

best wishes to your cousin. hope he finds his mojo.

From a knowledge standpoint, the online ones from coursera and numerous others by emeritus - columbia univ ..are outstanding.

I have told my cousin to go for a one year ( resident full time or part time )post graduate course from any of the top MBA schools. ISB, Great lakes, Various IIMs, XLRI etc.The resident ones are the best but quite expensive.

@Kapvin, it is a mix of learning, alumini network that he is looking for. The certification is an added advantage.

I would have mirrored your advice, given what your cousin is looking for. It's been a long time, but I do know for a fact that the original 3 IIMs and XLRI have very robust alumni networks. But those are biased towards the 2 year residential courses. Cannot comment on the others, except ISB which seems to make institutional efforts on alumni networking.

I did not know that the IIMs now offered a 1year full time residential course (or XLRI) but those would be my first choice esp if they had common classes / placements with the 2 year course.

Otherwise isb is still looking Best.
