Hello guys,
I'm actually confused between the EER (BTU/hw) and COP (w/w) and wondering which one is used to give bee star rating. Can you please provide me some insight on the same?

Many companies try to highlight the EER ratings, but still their BEE star rating is low. What should be the ideal EER or COP rating for an frugal-on-the-power-bills ac?

AC suggestions, please!! :
I'm staying in a rented apartment and may have to move again after a year. Considering this, is buying a split advisable? Or should I stick to a window ac?

My room is 14 ft x 11ft. Only one window and not west facing. What should be the adequate tonnage for my room?

Thanks,
Bon

If you refer to EER then anything in the range 3+ is good, this year the benchmarks have been revised (rather raised) so if there is a huge difference in cost between a 3+ 4 star and a 3.3+ 5 star then go for the 4 star.

Regarding split / window, my take would be window since otherwise split ac movemenmt is difficult and pricey since they have to take out the pipe connecting the indoor and outdoor units and refit it with coolant gas refilling if required.

What is your running hours of the AC per day?

Thank you so much for your reply! :) By 3+ you mean the w/w (COP) right?

I plan to use the AC for atleast 5-6 hours everyday atleast in this scorching hot summer. Thanks for clarifying on the split/window ac part. I was kinda tilting towards Panasonic Cube earlier. Would it be a good choice or should I play safe with a window ac?

Given my room size of 154 sq.ft (no west facing window), could you please recommend the right tonnage for my room?

Finally, I've sort of narrowed down my choice in window ACs to Hitachi, General or Voltas. Which one would you suggest of the 3? :)

Re: Some gyan needed on 'actual' EER ratings and also suggestions for an air conditio

3+ is w/w. I would prefer window ACs better than cube which is a specialized AC and may suffer in availability of spares in future in case the model does not go well in the market.

If your room does not have east / west facing sides and is not on the top floor then 1 Ton would be sufficient, otherwise 1.5 Ton.

Regarding selecting your brand, ogeneral is very good i have heard, I personally have career and am happy. I believe you should check which one is balance between power consumption, cost (including installation) and recurring annual maintainance fees (different companies have different AMC rates).

If you move often or stay in rented apartment I would recommend you not to go for split. I went for split A/C and since I was staying in rented place I moved atleast 3-4 times and had to paid a heft amount for the fittings etc.

Correct ......... just try, if possible, to instal the window AC at the highest level on the window. It would result in better cooling and better air circulation.

well to move the split anywhere else you would not need to refill the gas. the tech can just set the pump down and minimal gas is wasted that wont need a refill if its being moved 1st time. we dont change houses freqyently..

for 154 sft . if no direct sunlight and you have 1-2 floors above your flat/room . a 1 tonner should suffice you. if it gets direct sunlight go for a 1.5 tonner.

split being more effective in cooling due to better circulation of air is very evident.

if you still plan for a window and can bear one time expense i would suggest go for o' general else daikin and you wont regret however the cost is on the higher side but the performance is something to be bragged about. it followed by hitachi and then voltas- carrier and so on.

just make sure you avoid samsung.. (only for ac)

Re: Some gyan needed on 'actual' EER ratings and also suggestions for an air conditio

Guys, thank you all for your replies. After much I've decided to drop the idea of going for a Window AC as making that thing fit in the iron grilled window is turning out to be a mess. Will need a lot of gas cutting to do to fit it in, besides the size of the AC will make the window 'unclosable'. :( I'm thinking of getting a split instead as I have a balcony attached to the room for the ext. unit, and drilling a hole thru the wall should be easier than gas cutting the iron window. :P

If anyone from Mumbai can suggest me the best place to purchase the AC from where prices are reasonable? I'm seeing the prices at Vijay Sales, Kings electronics, Croma etc. way higher than the prices mentioned for the models on compareindia dot com. I'm thinking of getting a 1T unit. Are there any good 1 Ton 4-5 star models upto 26k?

Please let me know. Never been more frustrated purchasing any other electronic gadget/appliance, but purchasing an AC is turning out to be a chore. No one place quotes the same price for any given model. :(

Re: Some gyan needed on 'actual' EER ratings and also suggestions for an air conditio

Can you please help me choose from these models?

Sharp AHA12LET 1Ton - 4 star
Panasonic Econ pearl 1T - 3 star
Daikin FTE35M 1T - 3 star
Whirlpool Chrome III - 1T - 3 star

Of these Sharp seems the most tempting as it is 4 stars and is available for an affordable Rs.24990 from Vijay Sales. Sharp have always been known for their product quality, but they are understated and under-rated. Besides, the bigger concern to me would be the After sales service. Any one has any experience with Sharp ACs?

Or should I play safe and get the whirlpool, cos I know their service setup is good enough.

As per 2012 norms the sharp is actually 3 stars. And as per 2011 it was just 4 star. So dont look for stars rather look for 3 things
1. Cooling capacity (since this is what you are buying an AC for, more the better)
2. EER (for relative power consumption)
3. Overall cost
4. Running Current as well as startup current (higher than running current), this point is importrant for you since you live in rented place and you must check the Electric Meter limitations with your landlord for your apartment first before purchasing the AC.

For your reference go to this page and look at the bottom for last year and this year's EER ratings

Re: Some gyan needed on 'actual' EER ratings and also suggestions for an air conditio

^ Thank you so much, Haisaikat Sir! I followed the suggestions in your above post and purchased the Panasonic Econ Pearl 1T. Got a April 2012 manufactured unit for 23.5k (installation 1.5k extra).

It has a Btu/hr of 11,500, EER (W/W) of 3.05 and operates at a running current of 5.0A. The installation guys will come tomorrow. Is it a good purchase? Please let me know. :)

Looking for a 2 ton a/c ..... O general 2 ton is out of stock in all of delhi, read bad reviews about the hitachi window ac's.

Should i just wait for the o general or is hitachi as good?

Re: Some gyan needed on 'actual' EER ratings and also suggestions for an air conditio

i have heard very good ratings for o general but unfortunately no personal usage possible since not available in kolkata. I would say if the wait period is very long look for other brands unless you want to wait out the entire summer :) If this not the first AC in your home then another consideration can be to buy from brand of existing AC if that aloows for cheaper maintainence contracts in subsequent years.

I was in the same dilemma when I was thinking of getting a window AC, but after going through numerous tech forums, from what i found out, Hitachis are not bad at all. They are just over-rated and over-priced. O'general is any day the safest bet and the most reliable. In Hitachi, Quadricool Summer TM is the one which you should look at if you are getting a Hitachi.

@Haisaikat : Thanks a lot for all the help, Saar! :) Got the AC fitted yesterday and very very satisfied with the cooling. I was adviced by many to get a 1.5T for my 140 sq.ft bed room, but this 1Tonner cools the room in 5-6 minutes. It uses 1,100 watts of power while a 1.5T would've used 1,800 watts and most probably would've short cycled to cool the same room.

Hope to save some monies in the utility bill. :P

Re: Some gyan needed on 'actual' EER ratings and also suggestions for an air conditio

I am planning to buy a split AC for a 125 sq ft room. I have shortlisted following models :

Daikin FTE35M 1 Ton 3 Star rated at Rs. 26000

Panasonic CS/CU-YC12PKY 1 Ton 3 Star rated at Rs. 26000

Which one will be better ? or suggest a better brand/model?

Does the saving in power in 5 star rated AC significantly more then a 3 star rated AC?

:sos:

You can find out an approx ffigure. Just check the power consumption and compare that might give you an indicative comparison of cost if you multiply daily usage hours with power comsumtion and months

Why opt for non-Inverter ACs when the clever way to save electric bills is to go by Inverter ACs.

I believe the sharp 1.1 ton inverter acs cost at arounf 31.5K. Get them or any other inverter.
