Hello friends, Finally I have bought A TV. I was using 22" Viewsonic LCD monitor since 5 years. Now its on-off switch has gone caput. That gave me one excuse to buy TV. I don't have any active satellite TV connection (and I won't be getting any). The TV will be used as screen to watch movie once a week or fortnight. Was least interested in aduio part as that duty is done by my Marantz stereo amp (not a fan of 5.1, the surround bug tried to bit me but the stereo bug is stronger). Source is Marantz DV 4002 DVP , its a very good(but now discontinued) upscaling DVDp with HDMI output. . My need was 32" LED or LCD, budget 30k, HD ready was enough for me as my viewing distance is going to be about 8' for 32" screen and I don' think I will spend more than 600 INR on 1 movie (I do not use downloaded stuff). So no Blu ray discs or BDPs. . I visited 3-4 showrooms (LG, Sony, Samsung,Videocon, Vu, Philips etc) and did lot of net research which made me go nuts. So decided to stick to E value showroom owned by a person known to me and brands he keeps. Things narrowed to a Philips 4000 series LED and Sony 32EX330. Had a close look at Sony BX350 LCD, whose other features (except back light) are almost same as EX 330 but the appearance did not appeal to me as compared to LED (This was after adjusting brightness to same level and selected 'Vivid' picture mode on both). Philips ahd good PQ and was fitting in my budget but Sony had slightly but definitely better PQ (couldn't pinpoint why it was looking better but I think the iamges were sharper), better connectivity options (there was no audio out in Philips, I don't know how. I personally checked the demo set by taking it dorom wall mount) and I was getting it at 32.9k (Same as flipkart price). So I selected it. It is from a dealer known to me personally. So I feel that the piece I got is absolutely unused one (I mean it won't be a demo piece). In addition, this model was launched about a month back only). The piece has finally arrived today evening. I will open it tomorrow. Lets see how it performs. . One improtant feature is that it has 'Direct light' (full array) LEDs rather than EDGE LEDs. Direct (full array) LED allow local dimming and are supposed to provide much better contrast than EDGE LEDs (closer to plasma). I came to know about this feature on net after placing order based on PQ alone. The salesman had no clue that this set has this feature. I Will open it tomorrow and put it on standmount. Planning to get it wall mounted after a week or so.

Doc, Congrats on your TV! It seems like a new model like the ex430 that avidyarthy purchased. Here's wishing you lots of happy movie watching.
Were you able to compare it with similar LEDs from Samsung?

I didn't like Samsung that much but I don't remember which model I saw and it was not side by side comparison. I didn't fiddle with the settings but Samsung appeared to bright and bit unnatural for my taste. I am happy with the purchase. Got it wall mounted. even VCDs look decent and DVDs are looking great.

Ordered some 14 movies from Flipkart . Now they will last for another 3 months. :)

Have the Sony 40EX430, the next in line of your EX330. Yes, agree with you on the higher brightness part of some others. But, looking at my use (of what little I get to see of TVs at home) I prefer to have better colour contrast in lieu of brightness. To get to that, I have reduced the back-light to almost the bare minimum levels and lo .... the colours are coming abso natural and deep now. Loving it!

Firstly, my apologies for bumping a relatively old thread. I am contemplating buying the same television. I've got a few questions:
1. Does the TV support .mkv and .srt formats. I can't live without subtitles.:o And I also watch a lot of HD movies.
2. You said you compared this to a Philips television. Was it the Philips 32PFL6357 ? I've actually shortlisted these two sets.
3. Will it be a long time before the Sony TV 2013 lineup starts showing up? You know what I mean.:p
Thanks in advance.

tufel:
1. Yes
2. I would stay away from Philips due to its service issues and parts availability problems. EX330 is a very good model and I just bought 3 of it after a lot of comparison
3. No clue

jaudere. Can you help,sir?

Sorry for the late reply but madbullram has already answered your queries. I do not know about other formats as I exclusively ue DVDs or VCDs.

Even I had shortlisted that model of philips but never got a chance to compare it with Sony.

These days I am too busy with cycling. I have not switched on my stereo for a month and have not watched a movie for long. Kids use the TV to watch some movies. I have visited this forum after a month.
