When I play DVDs in this BD player, the video is grainy. I currently run it through my Onkyo 609 but I have had this problem even before.

What is worse, when I have a DVD disc in the tray, there are grains even in the Home menu!

Can you share your settings and experience with DVDs? I have tried around 3 DVDs with same results.

Must be some problem with your player.. Go to Service Center.. I've same player n no problem at all.. Infact it upscales the DVDs so i find quality very satisfyin...

What sort of connection are you using for transferring video and audio? Is it HDMI? Or something else?

ooops.. i forgot to ask that.. :D

Is this problem with DVDs only ? How about the BR Discs ?

I own a BDp s360. Unless output resolution is set correctly, it outputs in default lower resolution. You should connect it through HDMI only, as other means will not permit you to output 1080p.

Go to video settings. There is an option for output priority - set to HDMI. Change the output resolution to 1080p.

Should have mentioned ...

I have connected it using HDMI and set the output resolution to 1080p (since setting it to Auto gave some flickering issues).

BR discs play flawlessly. So I don't think it is a player issue.

The other issue is that i see white dots appear across the screen whenever I load a DVD even when not watching it. I tried all the combinations of Screen settings. No luck yet.

Any help appreciated.

Is your TV FullHD? If it isn't set your BDP to output at the resolution of the TV. Otherwise DVDs will go through a upscale followed by a downscale, which could result in grains. BDs will go through only one downscale, so no grains there.
