I faced the same problem with my LCD TV as well and I was told to replace the entire panel. Did you get the check done through an authorised Sony technician ? If not, it would be better to get it done through him.

if it is a panel defect it is better to save your money on the repair and buy a new TV with extended warranty.

Yes, you are correct. In my case, I went for a new TV rather than having the panel changed. Do you guys know what would be the approximate cost of the panel in terms of percentage of the original cost of the TV ?

I think TV companies should give at least 3 years warranty as the probability of any manufacturing defects getting exposed is very high during that period.
I know few like Toshiba, Panasonic (i am not sure if the provide the same for LED TVs) are providing 3 years warranty.

Thank You for Reply

@Rangan: The repair guy consulted works for Sony Authorised Service Centre.I will surely log call with Service Centre and get it Checked.

@Audiodac :I enquired with some dealers regarding Extended Warranty on Lcd Purchase ,said that right now such policy is not available.

I have a question. Are there any stats available on the failure rates of flat panels ? For example, stats on the failure rate in the first year, in the 2nd year, etc ?? I guess there won't be, but just that if some one has seen it, they can share the details.

Also, like me, there might be many more users who would have got their panels breaking down immediately after the expiry of the warranty period (may be 1 to 2 years). I think the companies should not take the customers for granted.

@rangan : They are few pointers on Internet which shows stats of Lcd Tv Failures .But cannot specific on usage to year ratio and like wise.

I will Check out Toshiba and Panasonic warranty details .

Thank You .

Wow panel faiure within 3 years????? that's really really scary! And makes one wonder what poor longevity things have today. So much money and resources wasted for something that doesnt even last more than 3 years vs earlier when tv's would last 20 years.

It is the technology complexity, dear. The CRT is plain tube coated inside by phosphor upon which a cathode ray hits to produce a picture. Tube electronics was invented way back in the 50s and perfected since then. The LCD panel on the other hand has 1920x1080 LCD units. Each LCD has 3 sub-pixels of red-green-blue. Consider the failure probability. It is very difficult to maintain consistency and quality of the FAB manufacturing used in panels. Not justifying - just stating barebone facts.

Yes, that seems to be the reality. Then knowing how vulnerable are the flat screen panels to manufacturing defects, then can the companies give only 1 year warranty and later leave the customer in a helpless situation ? Knowing how vulnerable the TVs are now, companies should not take the customers for granted. So I wish the companies should give at least 3 years warranty to take care of few unlucky customers. Inspite of knowing the reliability of the flat panels, if they are giving only 1 year, then it is totally unjustified.
Why I say that warranty should be there for 3 years is that the probablity for the manufacturing defects to get exposed is high in the initial 1000 to 2000 hours of usage. Am I right ?

The sony service person is visiting tommorow ,lets see ..

@rangan: I visited few shops for New LCD TV and came to know that some brands including Sony gives +2 years of extended warranty charging around 2000 Rs more.
The exchange for my '''OLD''' LCD will fetch me Rs 3000.
