I recently bought a new sony str-dn840 to replace an old ES RECEIVER. The product is great except for when I turn the volume down and make the room quiet there is a definite audible humming noise. I never experienced any such noise with the old receiver unless I placed my ear on it.

My question is
1. Anybody else have an audible humming noise from this receiver?

2. If so, is this normal for this product?

I find it odd that it has such an audible hum noise.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

The humming isn't from the speakers though it's from the actually unit. No issue with prior receiver. Is your strdn840 completely quiet?

Any response at all will be greatly appreciated

is the hum audible even when in standby ?

the low humming seems to be normal behaviour of this receiver.

if its loud then the power lines else the transformer needs to be checked.

however low audible hum will be present.

Yeah even in standby mode there is a humming/buzz noise. Its not super loud but its certainly audible, enough for me to have noticed. This is most likely normal for this receiver given its price point but just wanted another opinion from other buyers.

I have it hooked up to a powered infinity subwoofer, and infinity reference bookshelf speakers and center channel. Wy do you ask?

Hi Sunchaser99,

I just bought the same receiver and I have the same hum in the unit itself. It's very annoying I can't imagine it's normal. Did you send it for repair?

Hi,

Technically no AVR is supposed to 'HUM' noise with volume set to ZERO. If others are facing an issue then this could be a transformer issue in the AVR...it could be a normal transformer and not toroidal transformers used in branded AVRs like Cambridge Audio / Marantz etc....

My advice...since you have paid your hard earned money...seek a replacement....or exchange it if possible for something better.

I had the same issue. To solve it disable the pass through option.
Go to Settings
HDMI Settings
Pass Through
OFF

You will see that there will be no hum sound when it is on stand by mode.Good luck!
