Hi
Yamaha YHT-299 is a very good system without doubt for <38K INR.In the coming months I would need a home theater system for music, games and movies.where I am debating on getting a yamaha yht series or building one of my own.

Question: Is there a massive sound quality difference going the second route?

In that budget, i highly doubt if you will be able to build a better 5.1 system by yourself unless you go the pre-owned route. i suggest you also consider Onkyo 5400 - i have auditioned it and it simply blew me away, it is also a 7.1 system. Available for 47k at Reliance digital

Is Onkyo 5400 the best you can buy/build in that price range?

From my auditioning experience that is true. I couldn't find any other combination that can give you 7 speakers, 1 active subwoofer, a receiver for 47k.
Also those front 3 speakers are much much bigger than yht-299's. You should see/hear them to believe. I recommend you to audition.

If you decide to go for entry level assembled home theatre, the cost will be much more...
Indicative prices of entry level components are given below:

AVR - 20-25K
Front BS - 12-15K
Centre - 8K
SW - 15-20K
Rear - 10-15K

Then you will also need a bdplayer/ media player... so calculate the price yourself.

If you are strict on your budget, go for HTiB.

And when you build yourself, inside a strict budget, you are never sure of the outcome. It might be good, it may not be good. For example, you may not get a great punch with a 15-20k subwoofer. A 20k receiver may not be able to drive your speakers to high volumes without distortion. But with a HTIB, all this is taken care of by the manufacturers. They'd know what it takes to drive their speakers and they'd ensure the speakers are all tone/timbre matched to sound similar (ex: front LCR). Inside a 50k budget, if i were you, i'd just go for the Onkyo 5400 since i have auditioned it and it blew me away (please note, i have auditioned Tannoys, Def techs, Jamo, Magnat, Yamahas, Pioneer etc - this system was very very comparable). But that is my taste, you should definitely audition.

Do the indian version/current versions have problems with HDMI handshake issues?
This, i'm not sure as i haven't owned them. Audition has only revealed the system's sonic abilities. You'd need to ask others who have owned Onkyo receivers for extended periods of time.

If you are Asking for HDMI Handshake in yht-299 following is my experience .

Thought I have been using the equipment for only a little over 1 week.
following items I have connected over HDMI and had no problems.

1) Videocon STB - HDMI - Yamaha AVR - TV - Worked Fine - Audio and Video .
2) ASUS HD Media Player - HDMI - Yamaha AVR - TV - Worked Fine Audio and Video. Almost every file I threw at it transferred to AVR just fine.
3) Miracast HDMI Stick - Similar to Chromecast - IPhone mirroring - VIA HDMI - Yamaha AVR - TV - Worked Fine for Audio and Video.

4) Audio Airplay Device - Connected Via Audio In - Worked for Audio ( Ofcourse this does not use HDMI )

The HDMI Cables I am using are also the inexpensive ones which cost about 100 bucks each on ebay.
