Dear All,

I am looking for in wall / in ceiling speakers for 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup with Denon AVR-X4400H. The Room is 12x19 ft and it is multipurpose space being a hall of a flat (typical housing arrangement in Mumbai :( ) with shared walls. So far I have considered or heard following set of speakers and have not really found anything spectacular or different in any of these. They sounded just about OK to me. I am also not very keen on going for dedicated Sub Woofer (hence Dali H-120 being considered). I like the soundscape to be less boom-boom and more articulate at less volume / db as possible.

I am about to go for Dali set but had epiphany to seek your opinions as well.
Sometimes external views / advise helps when one can't really figure out clear difference isn't it?

No Demo - took demo of Zensor 5 as non one has Dali in walls on demo.
Dali PHANTOM H-120 x 3 - LCR Height in Wall
Dali PHANTOM H-80 x 2 - Surround Height in Wall
PHANTOM E-60 x 2 - In Ceiling

Demo - Sounded just about OK to me. No different with or without Sub Woofer so not considering Sub Woofer here as well.
ELAC DEBUT IW-DC51-W x 1 - C Height in Wall
ELAC DEBUT IW-D61-W x 4 - LR & S Height in Wall
ELCA DEBUT IC-D61-W x 2 - In Ceiling

No Demo -
Polk VS255 C LS x 1 - C Height in Wall
Polk VS265 LS x 4 - LR & S Height in Wall
Polk 80f/x sl x 2 - In Ceiling

No Demo - Sub Woofer is a no no for me but still looking at these since they are very well priced compared to all others.
OSD BK-T53LCR x 1
OSD BK-T83 x 2
OSD BK-T61 x 2
OSD BK-R63A x 2
OSD ACOUSTIC-12 x 1

Did read about Bose, KEF, Cornered, klipsch, Tannoy, Yamaha and list is long but it is time to take final call as more I read; crazier it gets.
My ultimate plan was to have Atmos + DTS:X + Auro 3D setup compatible speaker placements but one wise soul convinced me that that's useless in a small space that I have to work with - I agreed for my own good. Have attached few pictures to give slight idea about the space I have to work within.

And yes I am upgrading from Onkyo HT 3100 which is nicely packed n stored away :).

Hi

First feedback based on shared pics is that the speakers are placed too high.....ideal placement should be around 5 to 6 feet from the ground......ear listening level.....center speaker should be behind the TV...(behind screens in theatres / cinemas) ...else below the TV......

You can google images of 5.1 placement and other configurations to get an idea ....

Bosch, P Audio, Polks, Bose, Sonodyne, Taga, Definitive Technology, Boston Acoustics...etc....have decent in wall / in ceiling speakers.....not many will be available for demo.....you can check and try...else rely on reviews and YouTube videos...

Speak to Sayyed at MZ Audio....they also deal in multiple brands.....

Thumb rule

Ensure that the Sensitivity is more than 89db..... The speaker which can deliver almost all frequencies between 20hz to 20khz is ideal.....

Some have put up coaxial Car speakers (3 way) as ceiling speakers and they do perform well as long as impedance is taken care of (which nowadays most AVRs are compatible through auto setup).

All the best...it now all boils down to your budget........if you are open to pre owned....you can look at OLX or Quikr...

In case you wish to buy ceiling speakers, I am shortly going to post Ad to sell my unused, Micca 8inch ceiling speakers (white) 4 nos. These are extremely popular speakers in US, you may please google on amazon.com for reviews.

On the other note, I agree that the speakers are kept way high, you may consider using stands.

Thanks efernand1...

I tried looking for specifications of DT8LCR but unable to find those. Any link you may have come across?

I am looking for in wall / in ceiling speakers for 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup with Denon AVR-X4400H.

There are speakers with shallow depth (or) kind of slim profile which can be wall mounted.. Would you be willing to consider one such for your room?..

My ultimate plan was to have Atmos + DTS:X + Auro 3D setup compatible speaker placements but one wise soul convinced me that that's useless in a small space that I have to work with

The Room is 12x19 ft

12 x 19 is fairly a good size room for HT & with Denon x4400 in consideration, you can aim for 5.1.4 Atmos / Dts X set-up.. If you can do 5.1.2 in the same room, then 5.1.4 is also possible in the room..

I am also not very keen on going for dedicated Sub Woofer

Sub-woofer is an essential part of any HT.. Without it, the impact would be less..

Paradigm has great collection of in wall in ceiling speakers with magnetic grill. Very neat. I am sure you can find a place in Mumbai to demo some of these. I am using the same with Denon X2400 and very happy with it.

shallow depth works as well - I were looking at KEF for this.

Which model are you using if I may ask ?

shallow depth works as well

Here is an example of speakers that have shallow depth.. Taga Harmony LCR60 SL.. At 11cm depth, it is 1/3rd depth of any full size BS speakers depth of 30cm.. They have wall mount provisions both horizontally & vertically..

My living room is smaller than your room (14 x 11) and i have 5 of these in my 5.2.2 set-up..

One more model to consider Emotiva Airmotiv E1

Can you tell the exact model no?

Dear All,

Thanks for your inputs; they made me think and research. I also took Demo of Definitive Technology DI, DT and UIW Series. Also on the same day took Demo of OSD Audio T83 series.

I have made up my mind to go with OSD Audio Black Series. I spent almost 3 hours listening to these and all of the source that I wanted to at that.

Centre - T53LCR
Front, Surround - T83
Ceiling - R63A
Sub Woofer - Acoustic 12

I found Definitive Technology to be on similar Acoustic lines compared to OSD Audio Black Series but at way higher price. Not sure if I am willing to pay that high for marginal improvement in quality.

I also looked at Definitive Technology Pro Cinema 600, 800 & 1000. Cool they are but cost is way high for the products if I compare with what I am willing to pay for and getting in return.

Dali H-120 are 4ohm so running 3 of these would (or may be not as jury is still out ) have caused challenges on AVR-X4400H since it only supports 6, 8ohm officially. Many said it can be done but really don't wish to spend time fixing & chasing for warranty if anything goes wrong in future.

What do you think?
