I picked up a Sony W674A 42" and it comes with an external power brick. Now everyone I speak to is recommending that I pick up a Stabilizer for it. My question for you gents is that we never use a stabilizer for for our laptops so why is it so important for a TV?

Also, in case there is a voltage fluctuation shouldn't the only damage be to the power brick and not the TV itself?

A stabilizer is useful if your place has extreme voltage fluctuations especially high voltage as it can cut off the mains at high voltage. The TV SMPS is designed to handle a wide range of voltage and in reality you don't need a stab. Dealers will always force you to buy a stabilizer not the ordinary one, but 'designed especially for LCD TV'. I used my old TCL CRT for more than 10 years and Panasonic lcd for over three years without a stabilizer. I am not using one for my current Sony TV also. But I have a servo stab and ups which I mainly use for htpc and avr. Better add a surge protector from Belkin.

Its always recommended to use a stabilizer.
But to answer your second question yes it will only damage your power brick. But lets say if a capacitor fails in the power brick there will be some huge surge with may take out other components. But in the case of LED circuit thats unlikely.

Also whats the DC voltage and ampere output for that power supply ?.

I too have been using my Panasonic plasma TV without a stabilizer for the last two years. No issue at the moment. I was actually recommended not to put one.....don't remember why. Can someone chip in who has actually had a problem with a voltage surge damaging a TV. I don't seem to hear of it very often.

Lots of people have had problems with tvs due to power fluctuations. There was a thread just today about LG tv going kaput.

Thanks. Which stabilizer do you recommend for a 42 inch Panasonic Plasma TV please? I suppose I have been lucky until now without any voltage problems, unless Bangalore has a more stable voltage supply generally?

^^ I think this is the thread you are referring to http://www.hifivision.com/televisio...10-flashing-standby-light-but-no-picture.html

He used 'V-Guard Crystal Plus connected to Belkin 6 socket surge protector. but still his tv and bdp conked off.
Well like i said in that thread for extreme power fluctuation i would recommend a servo based or CVT based stabilizer.

Well it depend on how old that plasma is ,if it a 2008 model you would probably need a 3amp stabilizer like V-guard Crystal plus.If its a 2012 model you could just use a V-guard 2amp Crystal.Bangalore supply is for the most part good but in summers or when there is heavy rain when transformers blow up or other issues then they are no better then other cities.Just a week or so ago when there was heavy shower the power went and when it returned the voltage used to vary from 160 to 260v.

Do note if you have DVR STB and if you connect that plus the plasma to a stabilizer then its better to go with a Crystal Plus.

Surge protector won't do voltage regulation.

I picked up a crystal plus today. Although to be honest I think 3amps protection is overkill since the TV only draws 84 watts but oh well.
