A friend of mine looking to to start out wants the following

1. Record player
2. Phono stage perfect if integrated with amp
3. Floor standing speakers

Under a lakh and a half preferably.

What would you recommend?

The choice of amplifier is rather simple and straightforward in the "Rega Brio" at its current discounted price - it has one of the finest integrated phono stages in amps below 1.5L and is a very well regarded amp vis-a-vis its amplification as well.

That leaves your friend about 90k to play with. For the TT, I would wager the "Rega Planar 2" to be a good match for the Rega Brio - there's something to be said about system synergy and takes the guesswork out of the equation though there are plenty of other options at the 50K mark from the likes of Project, Audio Technica and Denon.

With the remaining 40k, the only option for a floorstander, and which also happens to be a mighty fine one, is the "PSB Alpha T20". I have a pair myself and wholeheartedly recommend it. I daresay it'll be hard to beat the SQ even if you shop bookshelfs at the same price - it is one speaker that quite literally punches above its weight (again, at its current discounted price) and goes toe to toe with the likes of the Q Acoustics 3050i.

Amazing response thanks so much

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
