Hi folks, need your suggestions for stereo set up for a friend. His budget is 3 to 4 lakhs for the entire set up.

Based on my suggestion to select speakers first, he has short listed the following :-

Tannoy Revolution DC6T and Precision 6.2
Spendor A5 and A6R
PMC 20.23

He may use Parasound power amp with the speakers. He listens to all kinds of music except Classical and prefers it loud. Since he lives in an interior part of the Country, no auditioning is possible at his place and thus extensive auditioning is not possible in the nearest City i.e. Delhi.

Let the suggestions pour in.:)

Thank you AVM, actually I do not have much idea of the commercial speakers which play loud and clean.

Hoping that some FM with similar musical tastes would share his experiences.

Loud and clean? Definitely sounds like PMC.

Other suspects would be ATC, Spendor, Vienna Acoustics.

However, one choice of genres of music is no sure shot indicator of the sound signature he/she will like. One must hear a couple of systems to understand which sound is closest to his taste.

Also, a lot will depend on the source and amplification. Does he have those already or need to buy a complete setup?

Thank you for the suggestions Ranjeet. You sure have a point there. Based on my suggestions, he intends to visit Delhi and listen to the recommended speakers and also with the recommended amps if possible.

He has HT setup with B&W 683; needs to build a stereo rig from ground up.

I suggest your friend clearly not to enter into the specific stereo setup, since will not be enjoying songs through out his life and keep changing the stuffs.:p

Ask him to be happy and try to modify the existing one to suit to stereo listening, so can save valuable time and money.;)

I'd suggest ask him to visit Bass n Treble as well Sound of music. Sound of Music has Vienna Acoustics on demo, which are very good speakers for classical.

Did he buy B&W 683 after self-audition or was it based on someone's recommendation? If he does like his 683, then I guess as a logical step he can get the latest iteration of 683. Or even better PM series. Actually PM series is where I'd put my money if I were to take a B&W today.

Haha, Srini good suggestion. But a small problem - modifying the existing system is too time-consuming, and he most probably doesn't want to save money ;)

Does everyone here spend a bigger percentage on their music collection than their equipment?
Like say 4 lakhs for the system and 12 lakhs or more for their music collection. ( or under 1 lakh for the system and 3 lakhs for the music ...about 500CD's !).
After all, the equipment wouldn't mean a thing if it weren't for the music !
ROI on equipment is very low as the price goes up !

Maybe a ball park region of about 80K to 150K on equipment is a good place to work on ! ROI should be pretty high.

Unfortunately no one loves music and buys gear with ROI in mind.

(Unless we are using the terms ROI and resell value interchangeably.)

Ranjeet: little off topic. Clear your PM inbox. I am not able to PM you.

Clarification. Sorry, ROI wasn't meant to mean monetary return on investment or resale value etc. It was supposed to refer to the amount of satisfaction ( enjoyment !) you got from the equipment you were buying. It does look like a ROI but not in a monetary way !;)

Sorry, didn't realize. Please try again.

Aha, that sounds better ;)

I know a lot of FMs who have spent many multiples of the cost of their music on the reproduction of it, i.e. their system. Nothing wrong with that being audiophiles :)) ...also does depend a lot on the type of music one listens to. I listen to classical music (Western) and have several versions of a lot of works, but all of it (and I do buy most of it) doesn't really add up to the cost of any one of the components I currently use....and I include some ridiculously priced cables. LOL such is the folly !!

Bro,

If your friend is serious, will ask KJ to get his delhi dealer to get him home audition of the PMC Twenty.23 & an Eventus IO, since he is going to use parasound power amps.

Just let me know, if he is game for the same.

Thank you for your suggestions Ranjeetrain; I did suggest him to get in touch with Sid and Denny and he is already in touch with them. I'll ask him to look at the PM series also.
