Hi. I have a room size of 13.75' x 12 ' with approx 10' ceiling. Can someone suggest me a good screen size for LCD and a Home theater for me. I was thinking of having a HTPC stream to a TV and settle with a HTIB, after reading various posts in different forums, I am now thinking of building the components. Will this be too much for my space. As I currently live in a rented apartment, I do not want to get into some HTiB and then spend again when I move to a larger home by upgrading. Kindly advice

I am planning to have a 40" LED TV if that goes well in my room dimensions. I am planning to have INR 1 lac allocated to begin with. This need not be a complete. i want the best possible solution. I can afford more but not now, I would like to have the option of upgrading. Eg., Go for the best LED backlit first. Get a quality receiver in two months with front book shelves with a nice sub. Add two surrounds and a centre in two months. I would end up building my dream theater in a year :) Feel free to reply saying that Im stupid doing like this :)

I am planning to allocate ~ 1 to 1.5 lacs over a period of 12 months. This means I would get a 40" LED TV to begin and then get a good Receiver with fronts and sub alone in two months time. Then I would add Center and surrounds in next two to three months and then add the additional surrounds to it.

if its 1080p TV, then you can go upto 50" for a viewing distance of about 10'. even if its 720p, with HD content 50" will be comfortable.

Display always go for the biggest :D its not something you upgrade daily.... Why dont you manage with 2+1 setup for now with a decent AVR and later when you move you can make 5.1 or 7.1 setups... Or get an amp with Sub option later sell the amp and buy an AVR... Speakers I will leave it to your ears and budget... Tons of brands available and lots of threads in HFV.. Please search...

Just my 2 cents.

hey ,

try for a ps3 instead of a bluray player cos ps3 can not only play bluray discs but also is a multimedia hub.

Thanks for your replies. Now if we plan to have the TV which will be most of my budget, what options would you suggest both for 40" and 50" options. I have tons of HD content which I would stream from my UnRAID server via XBMC. I love it :)

go for lg 47" le5500 which comes for 80k,yamaha 667 for 36k , polk dsw 500 for 22k, wharfedale 9.5 for 25k, center and surrounds for 20k,bdp for 7k total 1.9lakhs ...........
may exceed ur budget but will suffice u....

I have a 10 x10 study and the following system has made me very happy

1. Denon 1611 - 28.5k
2. Paradigm CT70 ~ 30k

(in your room you could look at a CT90)
+ various sources

approx 60k with basic interconnects. which leaves you 90k for video & sources

Though edge-lit LEDs are all the rage quite beneficial wrt slimness and power efficiency, you'll lose very little by going with a LCD (And save a lot of moolah). Under all circumstances I would recommend a full-HD product and preferably a 46"+. with the money left over buy a sony 370 bdp, or an xtreamer, or build an hTpc or (depending on the price of tv you buy) more than one of the above. my advice - dont look at plasma-- for many reasons, most of all if you are looking at an htpc..

If you are on a specific budget i have these little bits of advice

1. balance your budget between all components, don't overspend on one at the expense of others (for example don't do hi end tv + an HTib OR a good 5.1 system and then mate it to a 20" tv); you'll do justice to neither. also you'll end up in spiral of upgrades and end up spending far more to do justice

2. second hand AV is dirt cheap, remember this when you buy, so be sure of what you are buying, coz if you are not happy, you'll get next to nothing when you sell.

3. ask yourself what you REALLY need (For eg - i purchased the 1611 coz i wanted a single wire hdmo connection between my tv and amp with analog sources being converted to HDMI) otherwise a 1311 or a onkyo 508 would have been enough at a much cheaper rate

if you have a flexible budget, then of course, it's a bit different...

all the best!

@canduu. 47" will it be too big for a viewing distance of 10'. I went to the local Onkyo showroom for a demo. The 3300 did not satisfy me. Its speakers are not that great and also it has a passive sub. I am not going for a HTiB. I am going to build it component wise.. I will build it one at a time slowly but have my dream HT ready :)

Another Point. Do I need a BD Player. I have a HTPC which has BluRay Rips and Untouched. Does this make a difference when I play it using a computer vs a BD Player? I need to upgrade my HTPC also with a ATI 5xxx series which streams TrueHD and DTS MA. Now every thing is sent as LPCM(analogue) or DTS(via HDMI).

@canduu. 47" will it be too big for a viewing distance of 10'.

I watch a 47" from a distance of about 9 feet... for HD content.. that's just fine (and the angle of vision is still less than when I watch my larger projector based HT)

did anyone tell you that it (47") is too much or is it a matter of your own personal preference?

best wishes

Hi,

For AVR go with Onkyo 608 with Wharfedale 9.2 as fronts for starters. The 9.2s has enough bass that you won't be needing a sub for now.If you are planning to upgrade your TV sooner than later, its sensible to go with a 42 inch Panny plasma for now.For source it depends upon the format in which you are having all your HD stuff. If these are blu ray discs obviously a blu ray player. But if they are stored in a hard disk go with a media player like WD TV Live. I think you can have all this around your budget of 1 lac.
Happy Hunting!

cheers,
sri

Hi Thanks for your replies. I read in different forums that listening to quality music requires a different setup and watching movies require a different setup. I have a huge FLAC collection which I'd love to hear on a regular basis. Do I need to setup a different 2.1 for my music and go for a separate HT or is there a setup that would suffice both my requirements

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
