After moving to Bangalore, I've set up a small system in the TV room. The components and cables are all leftover from previous systems/experiments. The setup is as follows:
1. Transport: Sony 490 blu ray player. This is hooked up to the TV as well and was bought for movie use.
2. DAC: Behringer Ultramatch Pro SRC2496. Was originally bought for sample rate converter duties, was being used as a DAC for the pc prior to this.
3. Amplifier: Miniwatt with upgraded (Russian NOS) tubes. Bought around 3 years back. Used occasionally
4. Speakers: Cambridge Audio S30. Originally bought for desktop use. Have spent their entire life lying in the box. Mounted on Paradigm stands, leftover from my old Dynaudio speakers.
5. Cables: Belkin Synapse digital cable, Supra entry level ICs, generic speaker cables

None of the components cost more than 15k new. I think the most I spent was on the Behringer, which cost around 12.5k. The amp was around 10 including shipping, customs at the time. The speakers were ex demo and cost 6k.

I honestly wasnt expecting anything when I hooked up the system. It was mainly for movies. The quality of sound an offer has been a very pleasant surprise. A few observations.
1. Resolution is reasonably high, at a level with what I would expect from 50k speakers. Have a good sense of space and microdynamics are well captured.
2. Soundstage is nice and deep with good placement etc. The speakers disappear completely.
3. Speed is the main area where they system falls short. I suspect that the amp is a bit underpowered.
4. Frequency balance is fine. Deep bass is missing but thats to be expected given the compact speaker size. No extra bite in the treble or recessed midrange.

Overall, I am very impressed with how good these components sound together. I suspect a more powerful amp would help resolve the speed issue but this level of refinement may be missing.

The attached picture should give an idea of setup. Sorry for the poor pic quality - taken with a phone. Listening position is around 5' from the speakers.

Thanks for review,I think speakers are also worth to be considered. In recent Pune meet,we heard S30 & most of us liked openness, surprisingly good Bass & good vocals from it.

jaibir, thanks for that update. If it sounds good to your discerning ears, then it sure must be something.

Right now, I feel, the Topping tp20, the CA S30 alongwith an ODAC would be just what the doctor ordered for the cash strapped audiophile, who wants quality sound nonetheless.

dont be too tight in cash to settle for s30 i have heard it .. it rolls off in 70Hz or more .Most newbies will never like it .

It may be advisable to keep my listening preferences in mind. I am not someone who likes very prominent bass (one reason why I dont like any of the PSB towers). Also, in this case, the listening distance is only 5 ft or so.

One additional thing to note: I dont think these speakers will do well in a large room with a longer listening distance. They are great for such quasi-nearfield use but not much more

prominent bass? are you sure .......
to me they appeared too bass dry...even the warfs 8.1 also

i felt like apart from the audiophile type looks , they are just wastage of money
even the entry level ushers BS also are just for the looks

I have heard the two PSB Synchrony towers and the new Imagine T2. Both have prominent bass to my ears. I havent really heard their other towers.

I have not heard the Wharfedale 8.1 speakers.

Hi Jai
Good to know that the setup is working out well for you

OT - What about your main setup i.e. Rethm amp and speakers? Are you also going to bring that to Bangalore in near future?

The main setup is already up and running in Bangalore.

Transport: Teac VRDS10 / Audio pc with Lynx AES16 card
Dac: Lampizator L3
Amp: Rethm Gaanam
Speakers: Rethm Saadhana V1

Hi Jai, would love to know that the Lampizator is all about. Did you get it from Poland? PM me and perhaps we could have a listen to each others "toys"! :)

Like marriage are matched in Heaven. Hi fi are matched in Bangalore. Matching is the main thing. Very recently I came across one meridian shoe box type pre power combo with power suppy. Matched with marantz sacd player with some good neutral budget cable and interconnect but vfm. The speakers were spendor which was quite old. I don't know its model. That particular model is still famous I was told. The speaker had been put up on a normal stand. Back ground was put up with a huge screen. I was auditioned with a normal tamil old mp3 song. Wow the sound was amazing as if the compression in the mp3 had been unleashed. Huge sound stage. But lacked deep bass but bass was there. Extra wide sound stage highly amazed with its performance. No power conditioner or no high quality power chord was there. It was good match with systems, acoustics of the room. But it took time to the gentle man to attain the level. I hope his step would not have cost him not more than 40k. Probably he might have got cheaper. What I want to say here is matching matching according to our taste is the good thing here. There is no meaning in spending lakhs in not matching systems.

From your description of the components in the system I guess you are talking about the system owned by a forum member in Madras.

The speakers are Spendor LS3/5A and Meridian 101/103 or 105 pre power amps. It is not surprising that the system sounded good. These are classic components that sounded very good then and still sound very good.

I have not heard this particular system but have heard the LS3/5A's and the Meridian amps in different systems.

Yes this is the first time I am visiting forum members. I was moved by their hospitality and their systems and the way of listening and tastes. What was my big surprise wastheir huge collection audiophile grade songs, musics. All have been done painstakingly. What a dedication? I appreciate their home makers who also support or not opposing to their earning members tastes. I was moved by their gesture of not hesitating to share their experience with bad and good hifi gears. I feel there is a chain of thick friendship running between chennai hi fi enthusiast. Long live their passion and hats off to their hospitality. These all happened because of hifivision thanks HFV

Thanks for the kind word gents. Happy to have people over. Weekends usually work provided things are fixed up a couple of days advance. I live off Sarjapur Outer Ring Road

Two word of caution though - 1. the system is not yet fully settled into the new room and 2. I'm not much of a scotch fan, preferring bourbon and Irish instead

Can wait till you and the system settles down. If you need any help in settling down in a new city...let us know

Now this is a serious problem...shall we go for the lowest common denominator? Chai?...or BYOB ;)
