I have Denon 2300 receiver, which either supports 7.1 channels or dolby atmos setup. Since not all movies have atmos recording, and I do not want to sacrifice my atmos environment, is there any possibility to use a switch to route outputs to either 7.1 surround back speakers or ceiling speakers, depending on what I need? I know its a weird thought, but is there any possibility? I do have additional speakers to support both

Good one.. you can have a speaker switch that toggles between heights and surround back, which should provide you the flexibility with necessary settings in AVR..

But, assuming you have connected the speaker output from AVR to switch to toggle between surr back & Atmos..

- You will need to make the changes in AVR menu (Amp assign) each time you make the change..
- How would you calibrate the AVR, if you were to switch bet surr back/ heights..
- Am not very sure if the speaker level, distance, crossover settings will be lost when you make the amp assign setting in AVR...

Elangoas is correct here. Even if you install a speaker switch, to toggle between the Atmos and rear surrounds, you will have to carry out the calibration after changing the speaker assignment from rear surrounds to Atmos heights and vice versa each time.

What is the size of your listening room. Unless its a big hall having depth behind your listening position for optimum placement of your rear surrounds, you could live with a good 5.1 setup and really not miss the rear surrounds at all. So you can keep a 5.1 setup and add 2 over head speakers right above your listening position for Atmos. Hope this helps.

If you have an Atmos Set-up, you can simply use the "Dolby Surround" mode in your AVR for all the non-atmos content.
Dolby Surround:This mode uses Dolby Surround Upmixer to extend various sources to natural and realistic multi channels for playback. Use ceiling speakers such as top middle speakers to realize a three-dimensional sound field.

I have an atmos setup and use Dolby Surround mode, for non-atmos content.

Best is 5.1.2 setup than 7.1...atmos and dtsx sounds better in heights
