The Tata Sky installation guy cam yesterday and installed the DVR. I stay in a high rise and there is an option of bringing the cabling on a concealed basis from the roof. However, the cable guy could only insert one cable in the pipe provided for this. He mentioned that typically there are two cables that they install- one which carries the current signal and the other which is there only for futureprofing. He assured me that there would not be any loss due to installing only one cable. Does anyone have any idea what this is about? Thanks!

I got mine installed a week back and the guy told me that the 2nd cable is for recording another program when something else is being watched on the tv live. I asked him about the 2 USB slots and he said both are inactive and they are for future use. Reading this thread got me thinking... :)

Thanks, Amit

Thanks, guys.

So basically at this point I've wasted the cash- might as well have gone for the non DVR HD box! Will lodge a complaint with Tata Sky..

Generally, there two cable coming from two outputs at LNB on dish. These are fed to two tuners inside DVR. While one tuner used for recording other can be used for viewing. If you have this arrangement then you get more signal level. Quality of signal for each tuner better in heavy rain too.
To make shortcut these people attach LNB with single output and get single wire up to DVR. They split the wire using signal splitter (small metal box behind DVR) and feed cables to two tuners. Here you have complete band of channel but due signal loss quality may degrade. Outage can be experienced during rain, low quality of picture with pixel boxes on screen can be observed with fast motion and loss of audio in HD channel.

Thanks. I argued with the guy again- didn't seem to work. Also there is no space to get the 2 wires through the internal wiring. I think I'll live without it for now...what else to do?

I do not think you will have a problem. In case of multiple TVs also they use a splitter and it works fine.
