Hi Fm's,

Music is something that is supposed to soothe, calm your nerves and brighten up the mood. But when blasted beyond the normal listening levels, it just translates into unwanted unbearable noise.
I am sure most of us have experienced this uncomfortable situation at weddings, parties, pubs and processions on the road where a conversation with the person next to you gets totally drowned in the loud music being blasted.

Not sure if blasting music means more fun and excitement, but it sure is detrimental to elderly people with heart issues, small children and our hearing too.
Hopefully common sense may prevail among the hosts or DJ's responsible for it. Not sure if the authorities too take this issue seriously especially in public places
Happy new year and safe listening.

Problem is most don't use spl meters.
They use their half deaf ears to feel the music.
That is the main reason for blasting.
People involved in the decision making of the loudness are all exposed to loud sound for years.

Telling this from first hand experience- have been more than 10 events from the audio rental team ( speakers d&b audiotechnik).
Lost excitement because of the exact problem you mentioned.
Couldn't enjoy the event because of the bad sound even though the speaker brand is the best in the world.

DJ's presence is in almost every gala occasion , be it wedding ceremony, birthday celebration , Puja etc. But while enjoying some may be oblivious of the veteran people , children and ailing ones. Personally I don't like this eardeafening gun (gaan in my vernacular meaning song, gana in Hindi). I feel uncomfortable and stay away from the gigantic speakers . I can't understand what the arrangers get out of this ? Surprisingly day by day this noisy music has become very popular ,even during immersion this announces it's presence. I think the youngsters should think about it's evil effect and stop this .
Regards

Hope for it but dont expect it

DJs are supposed to play loud music otherwise the attendees will feel disappointed. But in other functions like , marriages, pujas, etc, the soundwallahs who provide the sound system, deliberately turn the volume up merely to show off the power of their gears. In residential societies with several multi-storey buildings it becomes even more painful. But nobody seems to care.

I was dragged into a new year party by my extended family. When I was going through the ad from the organisers, I was quite surprised to find a mention of loud music and a mild warning to people who are sensitive to loud music and laser lights not to attend.

Unfortunately, so such warning is printed on wedding invites.

I don't know which part of India are you from. Come to Maharashtra during any festival season mainly like Ganpati festival, or any other festival or otherwise during any function like marriage, social gathering etc. or during any cricket match and you will see what real non sense behavior is all about. Yes, music is for relaxation but that is book theory only, till you see this great state of Maharashtra. There was a time when music in marriage pandals was played in max 200w-300w rms systems (more then sufficient) and these days there is no limit of how many thousand of watts is needed to fulfill the desires./show off of ppl. As we are developing the rational thinking part of brain is going down the drain. Obviously not applicable to all but it is the majority that is like this. And sorry no action by any govt authority for loud disturbing music, or any other necessary life saving rule implementation. And this menace of loud music has become more prominent in past 10 years.

The law regulating loud music in public spaces seems to avoid mention of any measure of loudness….or did I miss it?

This one mentions decibels

Shammi, I am from Maharashtra since birth & I have experienced this noise pollution grow exponentially concerning public events over approximately the last 20 years or so whether it is somebody's birthday, political celebrations or religious events. The concerned authorities are generally soft on this issue due to the so called "religious sentiments" which most take advantage of. Occasionally some Pubs too play loud music beyond the stipulated time. This is something the general public would hesitate to protest knowing where it would lead. Hence the most common solution here is to avoid such venues or shut your windows to cancel out as much noise as one can.

The main issue here is directed towards private celebrations/parties where you have been invited by a close person & cannot avoid it & have to tolerate the noise. The people generally are educated but brush aside the ill effects of loud noise in the name of celebrations when suggested. In fact the event can be really enjoyed by everyone & not just a few if music is being played at sane levels. I have experienced this trend in Bangalore too. Basically it is the mindset of the people as to what defines enjoyment & celebration which prevails over common sense.

The law regulating loud music in public spaces seems to avoid mention of any measure of loudness….or did I miss it?

There should be somewhere but not sure if they are serious about implementation.

I live next doors to a monastery where monks blow their dungchens — telescoping metal horns that extend up to 20 feet - during certain rituals. More than one dungchen create quite an almighty sound(90db to 120db). Apparently, the sound is supposed to replicate the ‘roar’ of the universe and carry the prayers of the monks across great distances — which they do 😁.

Pet peeve.

I stay near a popular wedding venue. I'm on the 9th floor and there is one 11 storied building and a 12 feet road between my building and the venue (which is on the ground floor). But, they blast what goes for music these day so loud, I often wish I had access to a high powered rifle to take out their equipment. I've used a free decibel-o-meter on my phone and it registers well above 100 dbs. I can't even hear myself think!!!

There used to be a roof top night club around 250 meters away (line of sight). They were no better. They would keep it up till 2:00-2:30 AM on some weekends. And they would start belting "music" from 2:00 PM on Sundays. I used to call them up and complain. But, zero results. They would take it down a notch for a few minutes but then, back to ear deafening levels. Thankfully, that hotel has been taken over by Hyatt's low range (?) brand and they seem to employ some sane individuals. Could hardly hear the celebrations on the 24th and 31st.

Are there some window treatments one can use (noise reducing curtains etc.)? I know double glazed windows are the best, can reduce noise significantly, but I guess renters or even home owners are out of luck (unless they replace existing ones). I have a cheap, albeit intrusive solution that I deploy on occasions (diwali etc., horny strays etc.)
Cheers,
Sid

https://mmtacoustixonline.com/products/soundproof-curtains-for-windows-doors I've seen these on the internet. Not sure about the efficacy though.
As for the intrusive solution, I have those in copious quantities.
