Thorens TD124 MkII + SME 3009 Mk II

A friend picked this up as a non working unit (it was cheap) and brought it to me for revival. The platter would not turn nor was it ready to get out of the chassis. The tonearm was in nearly two pieces

It took about half an hour to free up the jammed linkages etc. and get all functions of the tt working correctly with the platter going rock steady at perfect speed.

The tonearm took about five hours, made a new coupler for the stub holding the counterweights and some problems of the headshell coupler were rectified.
My friend is a happy boy now, enjoying his vinyl

A full service and a proper setup shall be done in a few days.

Had the opportunity to buy this very same unit - was also contacted by the same raddiwallah/trader - but held back after being told that the platter wasn't turning on switch on, and the condition of the tone arm counterweight stub. Too much of a hassle for me to repair and refurbish ( not knowing the extent of the damage first hand ), and in any case I do not need another TT, even one as legendary as the TD124. Your friend is lucky to have your skills available, and congratulations on getting the TT working again.

Great find and great going. The TD124 is a magnificent turntable and so is the SME 3009. Great job in fixing it and all the best for the restoration.

However, having owned the TD124 briefly, I would prefer the Garrards as I personally dislike TTs that have anything to do with belts

why introduce something that you dont like ?

there are many who prefer belt drives..

why not just congratulate the restorer and the owner and get on with it.
