Hello FMs,

I have just received my Topping TP60 from the US via ebay and I am a bit lost on its power requirements and such. It has not shipped with an adapter. The Box mentions that it is 110V. So I went about ordering a 250 watt step down converter from ebay which is already shipped.

I am not able to get the ampere rating of this amp anywhere on the net and neither is it on the manuals / box.

Can I use the 250 watt step down converter with this amp ?

This is what I ordered.

http://www.ebay.in/itm/150866322789?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Edit: There is a tiny inscription on the power cord that says 10A-125V. Won't this require a 10 x 110 watt step down converter ?

Regards,

Sunil

That will work okay, don't worry about marking on power cord. That marking mentions max rating before its breakdown. That TA2022 based amp has 100+100W rating in 4 ohms. So you need just over 200W for max rating. Not to say that chip 2022 sounds nice, I have one for last 7 years and another kit pending. Congratulations and welcome to club.

Received my step down converter, connected to and powered up my tp60. Sounded good but quite a bit under-powered compared to my old sony gr88 which was 85 + 85 RMS.

The step down converter gets hot after continuous use say for half an hour or so. Will a higher wattage step down converter improve the sonic performance, volume wise ?

It's getting hot means step down converter is not upto mark. Why you are not looking into local market.

Btw, rather than buying spree of step down converters you could have changed two toroidal transformer of amp. Or see if it has dual primary in parallel. If that is the case then make it in series, you are done without step down converter.

omishra,

I know very little of electronics or electricals. The thought had occurred to me to convert the 110v to 230v if possible but my know dependable electronics guys are not in the business anymore and I was a bit hesitant to take the amp to someone who I did not know.

Will see if I can get this done, thanks.

Sunil

Took the TP60 to a professional AV repair/service engineer today but he was reluctant to open the amp to make the necessary changes. (parallel to series) He however said that the amp would benefit from a better made step down converter than the one I had purchased (I had taken the step down along with me) and pointed me to a local dependable person who could do this for me.

I have placed an order for the step down converter with this person who was also of the opinion that the one I had was poorly made for use with an amp.

So another wait of 2-3 days with my fingers crossed hoping that the new step down will bring out the best in the Topping TP60 2022 !!!!

ps: Thanks once again to omishra for his suggestions which pointed me in the right direction. :)

Received my step down transformer yesterday. Big box and heavy. Stays cool even at long sessions at loud volumes. Cost me 1500/- and am very happy with it.

The topping TP60 is now playing quite a lot better. The low frequencies are still missing. It's as if I have set a cutoff at 80hz or so. But I do like the sound of it and the more I listen to it, the more I like it. Was listening to 'An Evening with Mark Knopfler' on iConserts HD with my 30 watt Sony sub connected. Very nice. And today morning to some Kenny Rogers on CD played on my cheap Sony DVD player and to test the volume, an MP3 Dance CD. Brings out quite a volume, it does, when pushed.

There are a few ways I could think of to get it to sound even better.

1. Change the speaker from my custom (probably very inefficient) speaker housing a 10" driver to say a KEF Q300 or a high efficiency bookshelf
2. Add a good sub.
3. Add a pre ?
4. Add a Dac ?

For my normal listening I hardly go beyond the 10 o'clock position. Overall, I am quite happy with the Topping TP60.

Hi, Ive just ordered my TP60 on amazon. I just wanted to find out how is your amp performing. Ive requested them for a 230V unit, do they come only in 110V units.

Another query, how have you connected your sub-woofer, do you have separate outs from your source.

Rgds,

My Topping TP60 is currently driving my Quad12L2. I am quite happy with the combination. The one area I sometimes feel the amp lacks for is in the power department. Although rated at 50 watts, I think it is more closer to the range of 15 to 20 watts. I have not connected any subwoofer to the amp. The amp does come with 230 V I think.

Please give your impressions of the amp after you have set your system up.

Bro it's 100W/PC. May be it's lacking ps from toroidal transformer. My 2022 based Amp is driving WF diamond 9.2 loudly. It's so loud that I am getting headache because it's connected to TV where I don't have control. I have put transformer of 230VA.

the quoted power for TP60 is 80 wpc at 4 ohm. at 8 ohm's its anywhere between 30-50wpc with 10% THD
while its .1% THD at 4 ohm at 50 wpc and .1% THD at 26 wpc at 8 ohm. so pushing it hard will lead to distortion.

if speakers are sensitive then 26w will be more than sufficient for low to moderate listening.

Quotes from datasheet
The TA2022 can output two channels at 100 watts each into a 4ohm load at 1% THD+N. The maximum amplifier output power is determined by a number of factors including the TA2022 junction temperature, the load impedance and the power supply voltage.
These Chinese kits are implemented using cost saving approaches. Please read datasheet of TA2022 chip which is heart of this Amp. Better kits are there which use good parts and correct layout which is crucial for these amps requirement. There is topic in Tripath application notes called "power supply pumping". That sure problem with cheap designs.

Example Read page 10 of this document.

"Quotes from datasheet " yes most of it..

thanks for the link. checking on it.

Hi omishra,

My topping TP60 is untouched / unmodified. Like I mentioned earlier, It's a really nice amp for low to moderate listening which is my listening levels at most times.

However, just out of curiosity, any simple tweaks to improve the performance. I am an absolute non-tech as far as audio engineering goes though. Wouldn't know a transformer from a capacitor

Don't fix anything which is not broken. TA2022 based amps sound great. Only thing in TP60 is less power due to poor implementation. For household usage 25W is more than sufficient.
So enjoy it! sometime source media may be poor in SQ. You have to acknowledge that too.
