Hi folks,

This is my 1st post on this great forum.

I've booked a Toshiba Regza 40PS10ZE and will be taking delivery on Sunday, 28th August.

I was vacillating between Samsung & Sony and was tempted to go in for a Panasonic Plasma but eventually decided on the Toshiba. The deciding factor, apart from the <50 K price was the picture quality. It is comparable with the Samsung series 5 and the equivalent 40" Bravia - I saw all three on display side by side at Vijay Sales, Pune from where I have booked the set.

Currently Toshiba is offering a Videocon GLK-6201 Go Live Kit with which one can get a DTH HD set top box. Installation charges of this DTH is Rs 1k. Toshiba also gives a 4GB pen drive which is pre-loaded with 2 movies.

The TV is supposed to be feature rich. Here's the link to the site which gives more details. carousel

I'll post my user expereince from Sunday onwards.

Congrads on the purchase. Please do share your review...+ the final price

Hi folks,

The Regza was delivered this forenoon.

I settled for a table top installation as it will be easier for me to access the various terminals, all of which are on the rear of the set. Might get it mounted on a wall later.

I'm still figuring out all the features and adjustments as till now, I had a 21" BPL Matrix CRT TV which had fairly simple controls.

My initial observations are on a 1-5 scale (1 = poor 5 = excellent)

1. Picture clarity is good. (4)
Really sharp images. Can see the difference between various channels which were not noticable on my 21" set.

2. HD channels are mind blowing. (5)
Hooked up my Videocon DTH trough one of the 2 HDMI ports. Videcon has 12 HD channels. Enjoyed them thoroughly. Was looking forward to watching the Belgian FI but alas, there was no power from 530 pm till the race ended :-( I'm watching the Man Utd Arsenal league match as I type this post. Awesome.

I'm yet to connect my laptop thru HDMI or the RGB/PC terminal. Shall get back once I do that.

3. Sound is good (3)
Clear reproduction. Basic treble, bass and balance settings can be made. There are no high end features like SRS or WOW etc. I plan to connect my 5.1 system once I figure out how to do that. I might be reaching out to the forum in a separate thread for help on this.

4. USB playback (4)
Checked mpeg2, mpeg4, avi, & flv - all played. My wife is thrilled as she can see all her Realplayer downloads I need to try out all the other formats. Toshiba says this model can play 27 video formats.

5. Colour reproduction (3/4)
HD channels seem great but on the others, my initial take was that the set was partial to red hues. All the default settings are good but not exactly what my wife and I are looking for. Even on my CRT, we had set a personal preference which was different from the default settings. I really need to play around and get the right settings. This will need some iterations. I'll dig back into the forum archives to see if there are good tips on what are the ideal Red, Blue & Green levels etc.

6. AV inputs. (5)
It has two AV inputs. I hooked up my DVD video output to one of them (the audio from my DVD is hooked up to my 5:1 system). Watched 'Help' starring the Beatles. Was great. I then connected my camera to the same AV input and checked out a few pictures and clips. As the images and clips were high res, they looked really cool.

7. Owner's Manual
I'm patiently going through the manual. It is functional and easy to understand. Here's a link for those of you who like to check out manuals.

8. Price
The MRP on the box was Rs 54,990/- The set had a build date of June 2011 and was from the Hitachi plant in Indonesia. Vijay Sales was retailing it at 49,990/- and settled for 48K. (This included a 4GD pen drive with 2 movies and the Videocon DTH set top box).

I'm attaching a few pictures taken today.

Bye folks. MU is plastering Arsenal. Got to see how many they end up scoring.

Hi Ranjit,

The manual says it can. You can ref pages 31-33 for the various formats video formats that Toshiba say this model can play. I don't have any mkv files so I can't 1st hand confirm this fact.

I'm not sure if the LCD panel is manufactured by Toshiba or a bought out item. My guess is that it must be manufactured by Toshiba as they would not have been able to be this price competitive if they out sourced the panel.

The specs of the panel are:

Size : 40"
Aspect ration 16:9
Dynamic contrast ratio: 50000 (got this from a Toshiba brochure - there was no mention in the owners's manual)
Brightness : 450 cd/m3
Resolution : 1920 x 1080

Hi arun,

Hope ur enjyn wit Regza...even i got 1 on 30th eve...still didn't fixed up..i hav a query...Did u register ur product online...? if so how..

Regards
Chakra

Hi Chakra,

Yes I am. HD is magnificient and the movies from my DVD player are looking just great.

A technician from Toshiba came home yesterday to wall mount the set. I opted for a table mount and he left the wall mount bracket with me. If I need to get a wall installation done in the future, then the next visit will be chargeable.

He also optimised the picture settings. Now the colours are perfect. I will post the settings in the TV settings thread.

As far as product registration is concerned, I did check on the web-site but could not regsiter there.

The technician who came yesterday brought another warranty card. He took the company part of it and asked me to get the customer part of it stamped by the sales dealer. (I had the warranty card that came in the box - that showed a 1 year comprehehive warranty). The card that the Toshiba person gave yesterday was a 3 year warranty card.

Happy viewing once your set is installed.

i checked wit croma aundh(pune) yest and they said same model for 55K but they giving 25inch lcd of toshiba free and videocon hd d2h free and 3years wattenty (1year toshiba 2years croma) but no 4gb pendrive.
just want to ask what your overall rating for the product for that led lcd and is that full HD?
and last 1 do u recommend to buy Toshiba based on your views
thx

Hi Rohit,

Sounds like a good deal. Throwing in a 24" LCD is a great bargain. Vijay Sales does not have this offer Maybe you should check if the Croma offer is for a demo piece or a boxed 40PS10ZE.

What this means compared to the price I paid at Vijay Sales, is that you are getting a 24" LCD for Rs 7000/-.

In case you don't need a second TV you could ask them for their best price without the 24" LCD. As mentioned in this thread by Kittu. letsbuy.com offers the set for 45K.

In terms of PQ, I am very happy with the HD channels & DVD playback. The 40PS10ZE is a full HD set. Some of the SD channels are not sharp whereas some are really good. Not sure if that is because of the STB or the TV. I liked the reproduction on my CRT TV better. I read elsewhere in this forum that the LED and LCD sets are more suited for HD rather than SD.

I would suggest that you check comparable sets (Sony/ Samsung/ LG/ Panasonic) side by side and watch your favourite channels and take a call.

As far as my recommendation goes I've a soft corner for Japanese brands. I was actually thinking of a Sony till I came across the Toshiba.

Hi Arun,

Please let me know abt. the Videocon HD DTH, which you have received with Toshiba TV:

1. Do we have to pay installation charges ?
2. Let me know abt. Subscription pack you get with Videocon DTH and its period.
3. Can we recharge base pack of videocon of Rs. 150/- after that? (DishTV dont allow that, which comes free with Samsung HDTV some time ago, so customer have to recharge Rs. 400-500 per month).

Thanks & regards

Nitin Dhanta

Hi Nitin,

Installation was extra at Rs 1000/-.

It came with a 30 day package of Platinum HD.

After that one has to renew / recharge as per one's choice. I plan to renew the platinum HD package.

I am attaching a file with their various packages that they sent me in response to a query I had raised. You will find the details therein useful.

Dear Arun,

But isnt it an edgelit led tv? This ofcourse is different than a convention full array back lit led tv.
Just want to know if your experience coninues to be as great for moving objects, sports channel etc?
I am planning to buy myself one for 45k but no freebees.

It would great if could reply asap.

Thanks,
Nitin

Hi Nitin,

All the sports channels, movie channels and Nat Geo on HD are amazing. In fact, nowadays, I am losing valuable 'shut eye' time as I get hooked onto the HD channels after 10 pm which is when I finish my dinner after reaching home from work.

Over the last few days, I have been gauging the PQ of the non HD channels too. I've not as yet checked all the channels, nevertheless, the attached file should give you an idea.

Hi Arun, Congratulations, I personally felt Toshiba Tvs were at par with Samsung/LG when i was auditioning for Tvs. I went for the Samsung mainly because it had 800 watts pmpo.

Hi Arun,

So you are saying that ou like the output. Is the black colour real black or greyish black? Plus since this is an edge lit and not conventional led- is the response time ok for moving objects and are there any blurring?

Hi Nitin,

No issues on moving images. I'm watching the India England 1 dayer now. Haven't noticed any blurring.

As far as black goes, I would say that it is proper black. Just saw a black SUV on Discoery HD and there was no greyish tinge anywhere. Is there any test that I can run to ascertain this?

Rgds, Arun

Just look at black shades in the picture and not black objects..you would be able to say if there are any greyish tinge..and btw how is the sound quality?

Hey Arun, am bothering you but just curious as need to pick up one for self

Nitin

Hi Nitin,

Well, I checked out black suits and other clothing in some serial on Star World HD. Black was jet bacl. No grey shades there.

Sound is OK. There are bass, treble and balance settings. Then there is a bass boost option. One feature that is useful is stable sound which, when selected, tones down sudden increase in vloume that usually occurs when ads come on.

MAybe you should visit a show room and check out this TV side by side with another brand and evaluate the differences.
