HI Folks
Seeking some help from experts as my knowledge is limited. I have a Laptop with HDMI out. It has a nVidia graphics card, the laptop is a Dell XPS M1530.
Now i have connected that to my AV- Denon 1912
When playing a MKV file with DTS Audio, the error i get on XBMC is "Unable to initialize audio device". This is when i select audio out as HDMI on XBMC settings. When i select Analog, i get audio out but its clearly not DTS/Dolby Digital. The SAME file when i play with my Blu Ray Player via USB i can see DTS appear on the AV which means audio input is DTS.
Is this because the laptop audio is unable to send out DTS or digital sound? How do i check if that sound card is capable of sending out digital audio? When i play with VLC, right click shows me in the audio options 5.1 also. Selecting that also does not work
Does a media player work better in this case( i guess so but asking to be sure)
Mods: If this has been discussed already please merge this, i tried my best to search but did not find this addressed anywhere

Right click volume icon at bottom right of taskbar. Select Playback Devices > Check the properties of the hdmi audio device. It should show the supported audio formats. Check whether DTS is selected. Also update your GPU driver.

Did that and sadly it says 2 Channel only supported. I got another laptop, more recent one and that has DTS and Dolby check boxes!! Looks like case for a media player gets stronger or will just use the Blu Ray Player. Only issue is that the movie restart or play from prev location is a pain with the Blu Ray Player!

Which OS do you have in your laptop?

Try updating Grapfix card driver, tha might fix some of these HDMI handshake issues with AVR.

It seems you're getting same problems I have faced earlier.

Please check Point No. 6 in the below post:
http://www.hifivision.com/home-thea...i-onkyo-ht-22hdx-ati-hdmi-out-bravia-led.html

It says something like this:
6. To get 5.1 surround sound...
Select "HDMI Resolution Settings"--> Sound-->Advanced. There I see an icon "ATI HDMI OUT". I click this icon and then I choose "Configure Speaker" (by right clicking or using 'Configure' button). Then I see 3 options: Stereo, Quadrophonic, 5.1 Surround.
Here I choose '5.1 surround' and then Onkyo HT's display starts showing "HDMI Multi Channel". So, now I am good to go with 5.1 audio.

You can also check post no. 20 of the same thread.
After setting 5.1 sound in HDMI OUT, just choose HDMI in Audio settings of XBMC player, then it should be working fine.

HTH.

There is a strange behavior now. I changed to the other laptop, where the sound card supports Digital out. When i play with the VLC media player and select output for audio to A/52 over S/PDIF then i get DTS out into the AVR. However when playing with XBMC and selecting HDMI out in audio settings under System, there is no audio out. I must be missing some settings, not sure which one though.
