Upgrade from VPI Scout 2

If you mention what type of music you listen and what you feel VPI Scout 2 is lacking for you to be looking for an upgrade, I may suggest. But again, I have never heard the VPI Scout turntable. So I have to be careful suggesting one for you.

It would also be good if you could describe the rest of the system and what you are missing in the scout. Also do you have a set budget?

You can also try upgrading your cartridge. In my experience it brings about the greatest upgrade to the sound. Of course you have to choose carefully, first to match your arm, second to suit the sound signature you prefer, and of course to remain within a budget.

You can also try optimising your VTA, alignment of nulls, tracking weight, and over hang. You just might find that doing these would bring substantial improvement without spending on new gear.

Tell us what's your current cartridge, phono preamp, phono interconnect, what you like or dislike about the present sound.

Happy hunting:)

i prefer mainly jazz and sometime rock.
i am using lehman audio black cube se phono stage
and Grado Sonata cartridge.
interconnect siltech

I think you already have top drawer equipment.

The Black Cube SE with the power brick is one hell of a phono stage. Very likeable.

I have not heard the Sonata, but I think that too is one of Grado's best offerings. If you want some change of scenery (and sonics), you could try some mid priced MC (provided of course your arm can handle low compliance cartridges).

Even the entry level Siltech London is a very fine cable.

I think you have it all figured out, equipment wise:)

May be you could try some fine tuning as suggested earlier.

Please try an listen to various rigs before you decide to upgrade. Different turntables have different sound signatures. I would assume your scout is going to be hard to beat.

my turntable tone arm is low mass arm hence low compliance cartridge will not be proper i think ...may be moderate to high compliance will be better.
presently i am thinking about Dynavector 20X2 (mid compliance one )

Hello tubek. I have heard the sonata2 and the dynavector dv20 on vpi arms and I greatly prefer the Grado. That has much more mid range fullness and warmth. The dv20 sounds a bit sterile in comparison. However if you are looking for more a more neutral sounding signature, it might work.

On the other hand, I would really suggest you get more powerful amps. Be-10 is a large speaker and the rg14 had drive issues in my setup which is a puny be718.

Hi,
If you are really looking for a serious upgrade in your vinyl listening, it has to be the TT first, especially since you are using a Scout 2. You may get more detail if you go for a more expensive cartridge but the weight and power of music will remain same/similar. My suggestion would be to look at something like the Rega RP8. Cartridge can be decided based on your remaining budget. It will take the sound to a higher plane in a more wholesome way IMO.
