Sachin, it is SL-D210 and yes it has P mount cartridge. What are the options as there seems to be an adapter available that converts non P-mount to P-mount? Also, quite a few manufacturers including Audio Technica, Grado etc make P-mount carts.

I would not advise buying that TT at this price. There are adapters available for converting H type to P mount, but they have their limitations. You can find some good entry level Technics at same price like, SLD-2,D3,D303,D202,Sl-1700 or SL-1300MK2 (which was priced higher than Sl-1200 series when new)
There were some very good Technics P Carts available in the past and was comparable with top of the line shure.

Sachin

Sajith knows this seller, so he is getting it for much lesser. As per Sajith's conversation with the seller, it is in mint condition and very sparingly used. Has a Audio Technica cart on it. Not much info on this TT on the net though.

That would be good if TT is in good condition and available at good price(5000-6000).There are replacement styli available for P mount cartridge.

Hi,

I have a SLD21-2 model TT, though purchased in a bad cosmetic condition (due to impulse purchase due to the name of Technics DD TT) and the Brass bush holding the Tonearm was worn-out, managed to fix it with a replacement, in the process lost the semi-auto functionality. Presently it is working in a fully manual mode It sounds good with a Shure M97xE MM cartridge after the Tonearm rewiring (with Cardas wires), and interconnect replacement.

If cmsajith finds the condition of the TT good, then I think it is worth a buy. I suggest him to go with Shure M97xE cart, as they suit very well with Technics Tonearms.

I have a offer for SL1400 Technics TT, which is in good condition, how far is it a upgrade for the SLD series, I request the vinyl pundits here to give their thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Murli,
Sl-1400 was priced $250(1976),and 1400MK2 $450 (1978) was a good mid level TT from Technics. This will be definitely an upgrade over your your present table. It should not be priced high though.

Sachin

Thankyou all for the comments. Santhosh, a special thanks for helping me in starting the TT journey.

The offered price is 8000 and the condition is pretty good (w/o any scratches except a slight wear n tear for the switch chrome plating).

Which is the best P-mount cartridge compatible with Technics?
If I change the tone arm, can I use the std cartridges? I am goggling to find out all the jargon related to TT:)

Is Grado cartridge recommended as I could see some people saying the possibility of hum since it is unshielded.

Hi sajith,

The SLD model uses a Technics headshell, so you dont need to change the tonearm for that. You only need to mount the cartridge on the headshell, and again fix the headshell on the tonearm, by this way you can swap different cartridge(fitted on individual headshells) in the same tonearm and use them. See the pics below of a bare headshell and a headshell mounted with cartridge :

Shure M97XE Phono Cartridge | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

To begin with you can use AT-91 cart from Audio-technica priced around Rs1500-1750/- each, and later upgrade to a Shure M97xE( priced around Rs.3.5 to 4k). The Shure plays with less surface noise, is very detailed, skips rarely, and a very good cart.

For Grado, there is a thread in Audiokarma where they have given the database for the hum issue. You can check that thread for the Grado compatibility for your Technics model.

Hope this helps.

I think currently it is having AT-91 cart.

My question was that can I use a Standard type cart in this TT, if I change the tone arm which supports that (instead of an adapter)?

Edit: Just now I checked the flickr pic you had posted. How can I attach that head shell to the current tone arm? So, with this head shell we can use a standard cartridge, right?

Im using a belt drive Technics SLBD20D after replacing the stock cartridge with the Audio Technica AT311EP P mount (universal).I got it through 20 north. The Technics with the AT cart is very good entry level value for money stuff.

Hi Sajith,

I have an SL-D202, which should be close to the model that you are looking at. The SL-D202 is a well built entry level TT that is still performing flawlessly even though it's nearly 3 decades old. I'm running it with the stock cartridge (stanton) and tonearm, and am enjoying the sound.

I would say go ahead since you are getting a mint piece without breaking the bank. Technics TTs are solidly built and reliable. You can then upgrade as you wish (stylus, cartridge, tonearm) and also move on to something bigger and better with time.

Cheers,
APK.

Hi Murli,
Technics headshell can't be fitted on this TT,as it supports only P mount cart(Fixed headshell). You can check this link for Grado hum
The NEW Grado Hum Database - AudioKarma.org Home Audio Stereo Discussion Forums
The best P mounts were old Technics cart if available.Shure M92E is another good option with JICO hyperelliptical stylus.

Hi

I am sorry, all along I was thinking the headshell was fixed with a P-Mount adapter, and hence my suggestions above.

If its not the case and if the Tonearm supports only P-Mount carts then the Op can consider the following :

T4P Type P-Mount Cartridges

Hi APK,
SlD-202 arm is complete different with removable headshell you have plant of choice regarding cartridge.CM Tt has fixed headshell and only P mount carts can be used, for standard mount cart he has to use H adapter.
