I have just recently setup HT with Dali Zensor 3, Zensor 1 and zensor vokal and a Marantz 5013. I plan to get a sub in a year as I went well past my initial budget. One of a friend suggested that a sub is must in HT, as Zensor 3 is not full range.
I personally had a word with @Love4sound , he assured me there is nothing to worry about with this setup.
I do enjoy the setup even without a sub, my viewing includes my collection with basic Dolby and DTS surrounds and Netflix, prime streaming.
Just a newbie question, Does playing Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD MA make my fronts work harder causing any issues at later point? I suppose the speakers safely ignore the frequencies which they cannot achieve, or does it work any different?

A sub is a must for movies but since you said that you want to take ur time with investing in a sub it’s ok. The z3 May get boomy or muddy at certain movie scenes where the LFE digs deep. Will it harm the speaker? As far as I know it shouldn’t. I have also used the z3 without sub for few weeks. A few also set their fronts as large even with a subwoofer but set the crossover so the deep lows are fed to the subwoofer. Just enjoy ur movies till you get a sub as you already like the current set up. A lot of entry level and midrange subs only handle till 30 and few go low as 25 but in today’s action movies a lot of scenes digs very low some even go below 20Hz but that doesn’t mean it will spoil the subwoofer that can’t handle below 30hz. It just gets muddy. Let’s see what other FM’s have to say regarding this

When there is no subwoofer, the fronts are treated as large by default ..When you play any multichannel content, the low Freq will be redirected to L/R, in your case the Zensor 3.. The speakers would reproduce the lows to whatever it is capable of..Guess Z3 is rated down to 50Hz..Should do fine as long as you don't push the volume levels too much..

Great, I'll keep my volume levels to acceptable levels. I guess it gets muddy below the acceptable levels. Thanks for your response .

Don't run speakers full range.
Set crossover in AVR at 40hz or 50hz.
So that the speakers don't distort on playing frequencies under 40hz..

Without subwoofers, in a 5.0 setup, I don't think crossovers can be set. Can anyone confirm?

When settings are large it is said that all frequencies are directed to the fronts...this is true...but then there is the frequency section where you can supposedly make some adjustments.....i did some adjustments and honestly not sure if it made much difference but my speakers dont jarr or sound bad....

Secondly if you have done autosetup using the audyssey mic etc...then it will accordingly adjust levels and tonal settings for all speakers...usually these settings are very conservative....so according to me, you should be fine as long as you dont turn the volume dial full or play content which has bad SQ....

You can.. When you don't have subwoofer, fronts are set as large.. For the rest of the speakers (Center / surrounds), you should have the option to set set crossover..

When you have subs, you can either set a single global crossover for all speakers (or) individual crossover for each channel.. Depending on the flexibility in the AVR..
