Hi All,

I intend to play games in my alienware with GT 240 M card, and its time to upgrade my PC, as the 8800GT graphics card is blown away.

My PC config : core2duo 1.6 GHz, 4GB corsair in Azus P5b mobo having 7.1 sound output
I have yamaha 5.1 rxv-367receiver

so heres where i need your help guys..
Can i go for a card which is fit for video and auido like ASUS Xonar HDAV 1.3 (or) go for two cards - video card and an audio card with optical output (or) stay cool with the audio card and only go for video card?

i am in US and will be returning this month end, so budget goes accordingly.. in the range of $150

If you dont want PC as HTPC,then nvidia is better for you with onboard sound.
If you need all in one solution, then ATI 56** above GC works as HTPC + Gaming solution.
Now if you wnat to sound Games better with HT upgrade, then Xonar HDAV...

oh now i noticed that the hdmi output has good audio output as well for the ati 56** series that you have mentioned. With core 2 duo which one among this will you suggest, and how it is compared with my laptop's nvidia 240M card?

Well I opted Sapphire 5570 which is low profile card.
56 series has same transistors as 5570,but has more clock speed & DDR5 support.
So if you need gaming solution Sapphire 5670 OT 57 series is good.HDMI audio is decoded by external HD AVR.

@ spirovious
Please clear my confusion.

does it mean HD5570 will sent vedio as well as multichennal sound to AVR via HDMI. If yes then how do we connect sound card with GC. (or there is no requirement of sound card, its confusing)

^^yep, the gcard will BITSTREAM 7.1 HD audio (untouched) along with the video...so if u have an AVR capable of HD audio processing via HDMI, thats the best bet.

@Imrahn

that means there is no requirement of connect sound card with GC or AVR.

As people have suggested, going for a separate sound card is not necessary with HD5 series card, specially if we have a reciever ........ How ever being a gamer I would definitely not suggest anything less than HD5850 for gaming on a 22"+ display on full HD with all eye candy turned to full. For audio all you need to do is connect your AVR with the card via an HDMI and configure your windows audio out to 7.1 or 5.1.

Just for the record I have the same config as yours, C2D but overclocked to 3.2 Ghz, 6 GB ram and same mobo but P5B Delux wifi, with HD5850 GPU and all current gen games float on my 24" IPS Full HD DELL ultrasharp monitor .......

Yes,no need of Soundcard as Graphiccard will send both audio/video to AVR.If you still wish to get sound from PC,then you can select plaback device as MB soundcard.

@sam9, how do you compare this card with my laptop having nvidia 240, i can see there is a difference? how big is it? i mean since my lappy has this 240m one, is it worthy to invest in this hd5050? or go with low profile?

^^ Depends on what resolution, display size and with what eye candy you wanna run your games. GT240M is a decent card and in all probability would run most of the games with less or no eye candy on your 15" laptop non HD display. If you are ok with this you might as well run your games on your laptop. But personally as a gamer I do not like, or infact would not like to play games on a laptop. HD 5850 is a much powerfull GPU and needs atleast a 22" monitor to take its full advantage. With all razz-m-tazz set to high its a pleasure to play games on 24" Full HD. So its your call depending on how much would you like to sacrifice ......

my PC has 22" monitor, as said before i was using 8800 GT.. and my laptop is 15" full HD.. so you can get the resolution..

but my P5B is not deluxe as yours, no wifi.. the basic one.. and i haven't or tried overclocking the Core2Duo 1.6 GHZ.. may be i can give a try..

so which should be good? the high end ati or is there any other next level of it?

thanks gain for helpin me..

okay finally decided to go for this one

Amazon.com: HIS Radeon HD 5770 1 GB GDDR5 Eyefinity DisplayPort HDMI 2x DL-DVI (HDCP) PCI Express 2.1 X16 Video Card Retail (RoHS) H577FK1GD: Electronics

which comes to 114 with rebate, should be fine for my budget.. hoping to use this for gaming and giving the sound out from this to my AMP.

Can i go for this?

P5B delux has some extra features thats all, nothing that you are missing too much, also even I had 8800GT prior to 5850 which now is in my other system that my bro uses with his 19" Samsung monitor.

Coming to 5770, its a good card...... I made my other friend buy this and he is more or less satisfied, if you are a regular gamer I would still suggest to go for 5850 as there is no game currently that 5850 lags in running on 24" at full HD. 5770 stutter in some games like metro 2033 and NFS Hot Pursuit 2010 with all high settings high. I am sure the difference should not be much between the two .....

PS :: Also as spirovious said try to go for Sapphire.
