Hi,

I am planning to use RTi A3 as surround and rear speakers and would like to mount them on the wall.

I know these are large speakers and it will be it of challenge to hang them so looking for some pointers here.

Thanks

-Rahul.

Don't they come with wall mount facility?

This from the net:

Have you experienced surround speakers tilted to the listening position?
I don't think it is a good idea to have surround speakers tilted like that. Surrounds have to create a diffused sort of an ambient sound.

If you can, check out tilted and straight and see what you like.

No I haven't experienced the surround speakers with titled sound. I don't have much problem with side surround but since seating is touching the rear wall, I would like it to point downwards. I thought it would be better.

So I am looking for something like AM-41 Side Clamp Bookshelf Speaker Wall Mount, Black | Pinpoint Mounts

May be I can wait till my next visit to US and for now use straight wall mount that is provided.

Hi RahulN

You can place them like this...

If you really want some tilt etc....you need to mount them on CRT TV stand for 14 inch TV

http://img.hisupplier.com/var/userImages/2011-05/04/143722814_Universal_CRT_TV_stand_s.jpg

These come with a belt to tie the TV and keep it in place......

Decide accordingly.....

As I said above its more about rear surround. Oh! I don't like the CRT TV ones. I cannot even think of drilling holes in my precious ones :).

Thanks

Do you already have the speakers? Does look like you do.

I suppose you would have done your research, but just a cursory bit of surfing tells me that 7.1 with the seat against the wall is not a good idea.
There will be no sound coming from behind you so really defeats the purpose of the rears.

Haven't checked but possibly dipoles/bipoles might work better??
Maybe atmos?
Just random thoughts.

You are right the rears are not that useful. My HT room is 15 ft so I'm planning to pull the seats up whenever in mood for good audio.

Yes, it will be 9.1 atmos setup with 2 ceiling speakers as well.

Movie theaters have tilted surrounds... Have seen them & wondered why manufacturer don't provide the same at home.

When you mount the surrounds above ear level and firing facing the opposite speaker, good chances you are missing some fun..

IMO, titled surround speaker should provide more fun than the regular ones..

Infinity Speaker Mount - SoundFoundations

This thing says it will take 12" deep speakers. Wonder of it will work.

SoundFoundations is by FM magma.

Unfortunately these won't work as the RTi A3 are 14 inch deep.

Yes, I also think tilted speakers will sound better. I also read in forums that having room behind the speaker makes the sound less boomier compared to wall mount.

I will grab some pinpoint mounts on my next trip to US.

Why take so much hassle just to experience rear surrounds ?

If you AVR supports heights, wides explore them.. If you like any of them, you may no longer required to pull your seats..

Yes, I know they are 14" deep that's why I was not sure they would fit.
It would be a good idea to connect with magma and see if he has a solution.

That's a great idea! I do now remember reading that wides might sound better than rears in certain situations.

I am quoting from elsewhere. Does seem logical to me

Well, this is one of those debates. In a movie theater, there are multiple surround speakers spaced around the back and sides of the screening room. Sound mixers, knowing this, tend to create diffuse, spacious, ambient surround tracks that don't localize specific sounds.
Reproducing this effect in a home using two speakers means either using speakers that themselves diffuse the sound -- which is why bipole and dipole speakers are often used as surrounds -- or by orienting direct-radiating speakers relative to the walls and/or ceiling so they use boundary reflections to create diffusion. In all cases, no speaker would be aimed directly at a listener.
There are some kinds of program material -- notably multichannel audio recordings -- for which the optimal speaker configuration is five identical full-range speakers. Hard to set up in most rooms, but a matched set of direct-radiators and a sub comes close. For this you'd want all the speakers aimed at the listener... but that same system would be sub-optimal for most movies.

If you look at any images for surround sound placement, most of them are stand mount to the sides of the listener (or) rears almost at the ear height..

Most of us don't have the liberty to place surrounds, surround backs on stands at ear level (at home) and hence we mount them on walls..

Take a look at the front heights.. They are tilted towards the listening position..

Titled surrounds try to achieve the same.. Though wall mounted, but angled towards listener ears..

I had used front height speakers in my set-up sometime back.. Didn't like the idea of hooking a BS near ceiling approx 10 feet from floor and 7 feet above ear level..

Re-used a pair of Onida KY theater (Full range speaker) for experimentation and i did find it good.. Imagine a titled surrounds at that position, should make the listening more exciting..

Yes, I have often wondered about that. But when you read manuals for AVRs or speakers, they most often suggest surround speaker height to be 2-3 feet above ear level.
Not sure about it myself. Just trying to get to the hang of it.

You've experimented with upto 9.x, I know, and have suggested it many times.
Very interesting thread, that one about the 9.1 :).
Have you ever experimented with tilting the rears?

For stereo listening, we aim for the Left & right tweeter at ear level.. Same should apply to wides, surrounds and rears..

Guess in the initial days of home theater, there would have been no titled surround speaker.. Hence AVR manufacturer were making life easy for us, by pictorially placing the speakers above ear level..

The images have been carry forwarded over the years with out change..

Change is good :)

:) Nope..Not tilting the rears..

But very soon will be experimenting surrounds titled to user...

Thanks a lot both of you such details discussion. I will go with directly mounting on the wall. Side I can place at listening height. Rears are 3 feet above.

I'm am pairing this with Marantz 7010.

If I don't like the setup then I will go for tilting mounts.

I am also installing a ceiling speaker, Polk RCi80, for Dolby atoms. Also wides and high will not work for me as the fronts are already placed to the widest position for aesthetic purpose and room height is just 9 ft.

You have a great AVR.. Try to play around positions if possible...

Wides have to be in-between your Front left & Surround left.. It not necessarily have to be exact as in the picture to enjoy the experience, anywhere close to that is also good (Not all room's are equal).
