My Father has a Samsung 3D plasma which has onboard sound decoding technologies of Dolby Digital Plus and Pulse alongwith DTS Premium Sound 5.1 and Studio Sound. The tv has a digital optical out port which we are planning to use for 5.1 speaker setup by connecting it to Philips HTS2512/94 which has Dolby Digital technology.

My question is "Would the DTS capabilities of the tv would ever be utilised in this setup as the Philips set has Dolby Digital decoder or the DD capability is limited to the onboard DVD player only and the TV's DTS decoding capability would be used by the 5.1 Philips speaker setup ?"

Do not use TV's optical output for connecting to HT. The TV's optical out will be downmixed to 2 channel. To get 5.1 sound, connect as follows:

Source (STB/BDP/DVDP) (HDMI Out) ==> (HDMI In) AVR (HDMI Out) ==> (HDMI In ARC) TV

Thanks brother but the Philips system doesn't have a HDMI port to configure the above settings.

I think your HTIB has no HDMI support (neither HDMI in or out).

Is your source a DVD player? If yes, you can connect its coaxial output to HTIB and optical or analog to TV in.

I suggest you to upgrade your HTIB to something new & better. Without HDMI, life could get tougher if not now, in the days to come.

Out TV has 2 hdmi port with 1 being dvi, our intentions are to use the 5.1 speaker system to output audio from the videos being played on TV whose source is an external HDD.

EXT HDD ==> TV (Video only) ==> Philips 5.1 Speakers (Audio output)

with the TV and speakers connected through Toshlink. The TV model is Samsung PS43F4900ARLXL which has only Digital Optical out and the Philips has both Digital Optical IN and Coaxial IN.

So, the TV has DTS and DD and Philips has DD, so the the DD for Philips is for the DVD player or the output would be DD only even if we connect a DD+DTS TV to the speakers. The Philips model number is HTS2512/94.

Hope this explains my concern.

Why don't you connect your TV to HTIB through optical cable, play a movie with DD/ DTS and check if you get surround sound. It is quite unlikely that your TV can bitstream 5.1 on optical out.

EDIT:
You manual on page 45 says
Audio Format: You can select the Digital Audio output format. The available
Digital Audio output format may differ depending on the input source.

By connecting to 5.1ch speakers in a Dolby Digital setup, maximize your
interactive 3D sound experience.

So there is a chance that your TV can passthrough 5.1 (only Dolby mentioned)

So Dolby has to be selected as the amplifier supports Dolby only.
