Hi All,

What should be the ideal distance of projector to be placed from the sceen? I am planning for 120" screen and a DLP Projector Optoma HD20 as it is cheaper than good LCD projector. Is baracket should be placed exactly in the center or is it ok to place 1/2 feet left or right? As DLP projector doesn't have vertical lens shift will it be a problem? Please advise?

Regards,

Santosh

Santosh, I get a 120 inch image on my Optoma HD 20 at around 14 feet although the manual says 13.4 feet. Since it a DLP projector, you do not have much placement options. You will have to mount it around 6 inches from the center because the lens is offset to one side.

I suggest you test by projecting an image and then only finalise the mount point.

Hi Santhol
I believe you must be using the zoom on the projector. How do you find the quality of the image projected when using zoom ?

Zoom is very less at 1.1x and does not affect image quality. I am happy with the projector's overall performance.

Thanks a lot for the quick response. The problem which I am facing is the mount is not installed at the center. It is around 1 feet towards the right. Probably I will go for LCD projector which allows vertical and horizontal lens shift like Epson 8500 UB. I am not sure whether Optoma HD 20 can project into 120" screen from 14 to 15 Feet?

HD 20 can project a 120" screen from 14' to 15' . Only issue i see is the mount placement for you.

dont make a decision just coz u or not able to get a customized mount .. u can order a customized L shaped mount which would solve ur problems..
shelling out close to 1L for 8500 just for placement flexibility is not the wisest decision.. if u like the 8500 for PQ then that is a different thing..

Santnai believe us, HD20 can project 120" from 14 feet:)

Yes, even in my case, I have an A/C fitted which prevents me from mounting the HD20 further back using a mount. So, I have placed my HD20 upside down on a shelf fitted to the rear wall. I did not bother trying to move the A/C elsewhere as HD20 is only for another year or two, who knows what projector I will have then:)

Thanks Jayad and Santosh. The mount is already fixed and if I have to shift the mount then I have to break my POP ceiling. What is this L shape mount? Can I use my existing mount to fix this mount?

Nothing available AFAIK. You will have to get one fabricated, not very difficult.
