I noted announcements by Airtel and Jio about offering starlink services in India.
Anyone knows what this is and what to expect?

Starlink provides Internet connection with just one antenna so, you can have Internet wherever you go. I think it talks to satellites directly. I am not sure though how Airtel and Jio would help in this.

since it uses direct satellite connectivity than via nearby towers, providers do not have to maintain these towers and subject to weather you will have the same connection anywhere on the planet ( theoretically)

The tech has high bandwidth similiar to 4G. rains/clouds etc can degrade and I suspect the subscription price is going to be pretty high maybe 5-10X if not more.

Well lets see what happens on April 2nd, if Tariffs are high for Indian imports to US. This deal might just go in thin Air..

agree 👍
it also could just be Trump/Musk strong-arm TARIFF tactics. Especially when Bangladesh radicals used it during the riots against India in the border areas

As per the govt this has been relaxed till sept and considering that US stock valuations are down and Short term TR bond rates are coming down, my guess is he got what he wanted to some extent. l
Perhaps expect more rhetoric and fewer actions for some more time for the markets to stabililze and then maybe a change in direction

According the the author of the book “The art of the deal” it’s a done deal.
No doubt face saving by some will ensue and face palming by others.
In any case I am excited to be able to be free of the mobile phone tether to the tower, specially in remote rural areas, unless they prioritise dense urban areas for quick profits.
By the way, what’s expected to happen the day after April fools day?

Trump was going to announce reciprocal tariffs on Indian imports, especially Pharma exports to the US by India. All this was probably arm twisting India to lower tariffs and allow entry of Elon Musk to india without exhorbitant fees/tariffs.

STARLINK needs:
1. An External Satellite Dish (similar to a DTH Dish Antenna)
2. Wiring from the Dish into the Home / Office (Similar To DTH)
3. An Indoor unit that receives the signal from the Dish & Retransmits Internet Bandwidth as a local (limited range) WiFi Signal.

Airtel / Jio will be responsible for:
a. Retailing the service in India
b. Selling, Installing & Maintaining the Hardware.

Yes, since its a Satellite delivered service, cost WILL Certainly be several times higher than local, fiber delivered broadband.

The service is ideal in underserved areas, where other forms of Internet connectivity are unsatisfactory.

In many countries, the Govt partly subsidises the service in underserved areas... Unlikely in India since we have reasonably good Internet service at even the gram Punchayet level, via 4G and the National Fibre Grid.

Thanks, There is a use case of entire remote villages , maybe ships etc to be well covered via these in the hills/jungles/islands etc for the dishes.

Do thy always need a Dish , that means it cannot be a substitute for a mobile phone ?

Just hoping the conventional tower-based cellular telephony doesn’t disappear and get replaced by a costlier satellite based one that gets imposed on all. Am all for it if it is lower/comparable cost and equal/ better quality and reliability. A better scenario would be when this gets introduced for niche use cases (eg navigation, difficult terrains, distant villages) and premium services (eg satellite radio… would love to see a return of Worldspace!).

When it comes to mainstream calls and internet, the existing combination of broadband and cellular technology serves the urban spaces very well (I don’t lose the signal in any part of Mumbai/Thane today unless I am in a skyscraper or in the basement).
