Where to buy tubes

Hi Sid,
Try be3amplifiers. I called them last week to check if they had 45 tubes. They didn't but the chap I spoke to mentioned he had for 12AX7 and they had JJ Teslar in stock @Rs.925 per piece. I don't have much knowledge on tubes, am not sure if 12AX7 is the same as 12AU7. Please give them a call.

Why do you want to buy your tubes from a dealer in India? As you must know, there are tons of tube-dealers abroad, and mostly they are quite reliable. Apart from the dealer Santosh has mentioned, I think these days Absolute Phase at Bangalore is a dealer of thetubestore of USA (according to the webpage of Absolute Phase). Give them a call and see what they can get you. Are you looking for NOS JJ or JJ reissues? Be3amplifiers seem to have the reissues.

All 12 tubes (12AX7, 12 AT7 and 12 AU7) have the same pin set-up, but have decreasing gain in the order I have listed them above. Replacing a higher gain tube by a lower gain tube seems feasible, but one should still check with experts (because using a particular tube type is part of the design), but one should not, in general, replace a lower gain tube with one having higher gain, because the circuit that follows after would then be overdriven and may not be designed to withstand that. So, generally, I'd say, Sid should not replace the 12AU7 with a 12AX7 unless he is absolutely sure the circuit in his amp after that tube can take that. (BTW, having said all that I have recently replaced the GE 5751 tubes in my amp by higher gain NOS Telefunken 12AX7 tubes, but in my case with the particular amp I have, many people worldwide are using the higher gain 12AX7s. In any case I always listen to music at not too loud volume.).

Thanks Asit. Reason for a local dealer is I want to be sure that when I receive the tubes they are in proper working order. Over the past 3-4 years I have ordered a number of tubes from The Tube Store delivered to me to my us address. When I got them back to india and used them I found that they had gone microphonic or worse. So I suspect shipping damage as these are quite fragile and even the tube store packaging - in the us - imo is not adequate. So I would prefer to buy tubes locally after the dealer has vouched for them. Of-course if this is not possible I will have to resort to importing them and try my luck.
I am looking for jj e88cc or 6922 reissues for now. These are for my Lamm ll2.1, as I slowly start experimenting with tube rolling. So far I have had the best sound with a pair of amperex NOS, but they are being used in my quicksilver tube amps where they sound divine. Yes you are right I am not going to replace the au7's with the ax7 - I am only looking to substitute Lamm recommended options.
Too much risk with anything else in the Lamm ll2.1
