Hi,

I want to buy an external hard disc of 500 GB. I will be using it mainly for storing movies and music. Should it have an independant power supply.Which one should I opt for. My friends suggest me SEAGATE AND TRANSCEND. Pl let me know as per experiences. The Seagate is a bit on the higher side from the price POV.

Thanks & Regards

I am surprised that your friends didnt suggest Western Digital to you.

Anyways you can get a bulkier 3.5 WD my book (500 gb) for around 3500/- (External power supply) or 2.5 WD my passport for around 5300/- USB powered (Most basic model)

Personally I have been using the my passport version and prefer that as it is easy to carry and there is no hassle to find external power source as you can directly connect it to laptop and use.

WD have a good reputation though seagate is also popular. Havent heard much about Transcend though.

I would definitely suggest you WD, I have two external drive from WD (160 and 640 GB) since 3 years. The quality is impeccable, no doubt about that. Also think about GeorgeO's suggestion. Go for 1 TB instead of 500 GB.

i recommend WD..i have USB powered 250GB passport (3 years), 320GB passport (1.5 years).. and external powered 1 TB myBook (2 months).. NO issues so far

you can order from ebay.
