No answer's really except that our Govt still wants to swallow up a lot by way of dutues + taxes + octroi. Apart from this - all companies [Sony; Samsung; Pana; LG] launch their state of the art & niche models in the US & here we are left with outdated technology... AND end up paying double or more for it.

IT'S FRUSTRATION TO THE CORE.

These sets do not sell as much as sets in 32 to 42 inch range. That range is considered "volumes" market and is priced accordingly. You would notice that there would not be too much difference (in %) in US and India prices.

Since larger sets do not sell as much, they are priced with MUCH higher margins. That results in such absurd prices.

Not only on lcd, lots of items in us are cheaper ,they get paid 4 times more than us and buy things half of the price compared to here,i dont know when its going to change .
Consumers are treated here as slaves, here consumer court acts not for customers .there are lots of loop holes for the gaint multinational companies to get escaped.

This is all global gas
1) Can show co relation og this with pricing?
2) Tell me about duty structure and tax structure... it seems you know so you crib about prices.
3) What is generally transportation costs? from abroad and within our country? How about quality of transport? How normally you measure it?Any comparison with US and EU . ( Please note EU has seamless roads and easy rules .. so One countries perishables are transported from one country to other crossing a country in bet. Massive trucks have " staff" of 5-7 people ,which seamlessly in 3 shifts)

So can you provide any sample costing??

Amazon.com: Sony Bravia KDL-46EX600 46" HDTV LED- LCD TV True Cinema technology: Televisions & Video

The base/mid model LG and samsung lcds are assembled in india, the panels are still imported and attract 5% duties.
But the expensive local dimming edge or backlight tvs are still a direct import and attract a custom duties of around 30%.

All sony tvs are a direct import and attract maximum duties. So for people who want it cheap there is the grey market.

Well I made a choice of 47" LGLE4600..... Today is the 3rd day since I received this beauty. She's super slim; lightweight; energy efficient; amazing sound quality. And' like I shared earlier priced extremely well [see my thread on 46" or 47" for the LG Authorised Dealers Address in Mumbai.

Final Price Rs. 66500/-

Taken under LG/Bajaj Finance Scheme - Pay just Rs.61/- & the rest in EMI's - NO PROCESSING FEES & NOT A PENNY EXTRA.

How did I get this price? - I quoted other dealers competitive prices to them. Got my old TV exchanged [Toshiba 29" PIP semiflat - 2500; Knock off free Blu-ray Player - 4500/-]. Maybe If I had haggled more - I might have got it down to 65K. And trust me guys - technically this set is a beauty & scores high on many fronts. Compared with other LED TV's
LG47 LE5500 - Rs 81000/- [No Bluray offer here - the price diff is too much over LG4600 to justify buying it. Do Not be fooled over "Netcast" and the supposedly better contrast ratio - its barely visible. There shud have been other factors like 200Hz motion-flow & a THX certified panel on this set for me to feel satisfied in paying that much more moolah. And guys STOP Crapping about this models local-dimming. It's still majorly LCD and a full-array local dimm set is ONLY on the LG8500 series which costs a BOMB!]
Sony 46 EX710 - Rs92,000/-
Samsung 46 Series 6 - Rs102,000/-
Note: VU & Haier are cheaper - but not great in PQ.

I will shortly give my feedback on this TV after having my wall mount done on 27/01/11 and then doing my own manual callibrations to get the best PQ.

Again Terense, the contrast ratio of 5500 is 5 lakhs while that 4600 is 2 lakhs, which is very crucial.Congrats on your purchase

Again Bala these crazy & irrational figures are touted by all major brands [ratios running into lacs. It would be interesting to check the following "The COntrast Ratio Game" at The Contrast Ratio Game: Playing with Numbers
see also
CONTRAST RATIO ARE MANUFACTURER'S SPECS IMPORTANT? at
CONTRAST RATIO: ARE MANUFACTURER'S SPECS IMPORTANT?

Also recall that in India sound/audio is always marketed by PMPO - the bigger the more bragging rights [whereas RMS watts is the true picture].

Now whilst there are some differences between the ACTUAL & not the touted contrast ratio's of a low end set vs the topline series - one should weigh other factors also that would justify paying a higher price - Is the refresh rate/technology used on the panel/sound/AV Inputs/Power Cons/ [In my case the difference of paying Rs14,500/- EXTRA was Crazy!!]

Lastly, I do agree that the LE5500 has a "very-slightly" better contrast ratio - however this is harly discernible to even the trained eye.... [I have been using professional broadcast monitors at work for the past 17 years and know these things quite well].

regarding contrast ratio, the figures are dynamic figures which are highly exaggerated, not to mention misleading. Different companies use different methods to arrive at these figures.
But balabala has a point, in that dynamic contrast ratio is useful when comparing models from the same manufacturer. Here the 5 lakh as opposed to 2 lakh simply means that the contrast (whatever the actual ANSI value may be) of the LE5500 is about twice the contrast of the 4600. If you could not discern much difference between the two models then good for you since you went for the model you feel is best. As the buyer and the person going to use the TV, you are the best judge.

Yes,Terence I agree with your point of view and Shredder too has correctly added his view.
Although the response time is a very crucial parametre in purchase(it's the same with both models),I thought the contrast ratio was also equally important, but as you have found out that the difference is not discernible to your eyes, then LE4600 should be a good choice, good that you had eloborated your views for the benefit of others.

samsung c750 3D LCD going for 69900/- at vijay sales today, cost of 46 is going down ,i think 55 is very very expensive, not many takers at those levels

Terence - congrats on your purchase!!! where did you buy this from?

Vijay Electronics at Santacruz -East - just across the Western Exp Highway on the road leading to the station offers the best deal [tel 66783885-7]. Theirs is an LG-Shoppe Only showroom. They have both 47" on display - 4600 & 5500 series.

Also see my thread
46" or 47" LED TV....Help, is LG47LE4600 Good!
You could go thru the whole discussion to see the reasons for and against - in making this decision.

I was apalled on seeing the various AD's in yesterday's papers [26th Jan-Offers] - everybody seems to be pushing LCD's and even the stupid 3D-TV's. I am so thrilled with my 47" lg4600 deal. In fact 2 other guys from my office went out and bought this same set.... [after I had done all the checking....lol]

Thanks Shredder, Bala, Canduu and so many other's. We must carry forth these discussions so that "buyers" & die-hard cinema lovers know the options available CLEARLY and thus make the BEST-Decisions. Hard bargaining also helps the end-user.

Go to Chroma/Vijay Sales/E-zone ONLY for doing "comparitive-studies" - they are the ONLY ones who will have most of the brands parallelly on display. Once you make up ur mind on the Model you want - then go to any local dealer and strike a bargain..... [Card payment/EMI's are also done by them!]. Warranties are covered by the manufacturing company & NOT BY THE SELLER alone.

That's the way to buy and electronic product in India.

I will shortly be initiating a new thread on the actual things to look out for whilst buying an LED/LCD/Plasma TV here in India and the BIG HOAX that 3D is [the tech launched here!]..... Note again -I am involved in the process of "creating 3D-CGI content" and have used these technologies extensively at work... thus I have seen the difference.

Meanwhile today, I am gonna get my 47" wall mounted at the "eye-level" as one sits and watches..... even this is a crucial point that local technicians & viewers take for granted.
